This month’s Revelation Film Festival in Perth will feature a short film produced by two Curtin University graduates, Emma Vickery and Steve Fleming.

The short dramatic comedy, Polarised, will screen on Thursday 12 July as part of the Festival’s Get Your Shorts On event.

The film tells the story of school holidays and unrequited love as the protagonist, 12 year old Beth, attempts to snare an older man.

The film’s writer and co-producer, 2008 Curtin film graduate Emma Vickery said Polarised has strong connections to Curtin.

“The director Steve and I met whilst studying film at Curtin,” she said.

“Many of our cast and crew are also Curtin graduates or staff, including lead actor Bradley Stevens, director of photography Deland Tay and editor Joachim Strand.

“This is the first film Steve and I have had screened at a festival as director and writer respectively and we’re very excited.”

The filmmakers hope to emulate the success of their fellow Curtin alumnus, Zak Hilditch who last month scooped the pool at the St Kilda Film Festival Awards in Victoria.

Zak took out best short film and best director for his post-apocalyptic sci-fi Transmission. The film also picked up the awards for Best Actor and Best Achievements in editing.

As well as completing his undergraduate degree and honours at Curtin, in recent years Zak has been a sessional tutor with the university’s Department of Film, TV and Screen Arts.

“When I first started studying film, Curtin lecturers Ron Elliott and Ken Miller gave me some invaluable filmmaking tips and I am grateful for their guidance,” Zak said.

Zak is now working on his first feature film, These Final Hours. This film has been funded through grants from Screen Australia, ScreenWest and Melbourne International Film Festival Fund.

These Final Hours will begin shooting in October.

Polarised screens on Thursday 12 July at the Astor Theatre as part of Get Your Shorts On.
