Curtin University has launched a free new credential that honours the legacy of its namesake the Rt Hon. John Curtin, Australia’s 14th prime minister.

The 20-hour online course titled John Curtin’s Vision: Legacy and Leadership, has been developed by the Faculty of Humanities and examines Curtin’s role during World War II, his leadership style and his  impact on modern Australia, while also strengthening connections to Curtin University’s heritage.

Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said the free course was designed for professionals working across the private and public sectors to further their professional development.

“This Curtin initiative is about more than history, it’s about inspiring future leaders through the lens of one of the nation’s most influential figures,” Professor Hayne said.

“The course will also benefit history enthusiasts, political scientists, journalists and educators seeking a deeper understanding of the legacy of Australia’s greatest Prime Minister.

“John Curtin’s leadership during one of Australia’s most challenging periods offers timeless lessons in resilience and vision.”

Expert historian Dr André Brett, Lecturer of History in Curtin’s School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry, said the history, philosophy and values of Curtin have enduring relevance for dealing with current issues.

“By revisiting Curtin’s political ascent and his leadership during wartime, we gain insights into the kind of courage and clarity needed in today’s world,” Dr Brett said.

“This course is a bridge between the past and the future, with lessons about leadership under pressure. Curtin confronted uncertainty with ambition and determination. To study him is to understand the making of modern Australia and to appreciate that it is continually being remade.”

The free credential is open to Curtin students, staff, alumni, and members of the public, including a range of professionals working across the private and public sectors including education, training, non-profit organisations and all levels of government.

Participants taking part in the free course can also complete an optional 10-hour formal assessment for $150, earning five Curtin credit points plus a digital badge.
