Course overview
Curtin’s Bachelor of Engineering offers you an immersive, industry-connected university experience. Our aim is for you to graduate with the expertise to design and implement solutions to a wide range of societal and industrial engineering challenges.
Your studies will begin with the Engineering Foundation Year (EFY). Designed in consultation with industry, the EFY provides the fundamental concepts and skills required by all engineering fields. Plus, if you're unsure which engineering career you'd enjoy most, the EFY lets you explore the various fields before choosing your major.
These are the engineering majors you can choose from:
Professional accreditation and recognition
Curtin’s Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is accredited by Engineers Australia (EA) and recognised internationally. Curtin proactively seeks course accreditation by EA, ensuring that graduates have professional recognition in Australia and by international signatories to the Washington Accord.
As EA accreditation is based on graduate outcomes, a new or recently established course may be granted provisional accreditation until it has attained the threshold number of graduates required for full accreditation.
Provisional accreditation indicates that the course meets the accreditation criteria to the extent possible at the time of evaluation and is likely to be granted full accreditation in the future. Several majors are recently established courses that are seeking provisional accreditation.

Course structure
Engineering Foundation Year
In your EFY, you will gain a thorough grounding in engineering theory. You'll also begin acquiring practical skills, in Curtin's dedicated first-year engineering studio.
Your EFY includes:
- interactive lectures
- small group tutorials and workshops
- hands-on physical and computer laboratory work
- team-based design and simulation projects
- portfolio development, with emphasis on reflection and self-evaluation
- engagement with industry representatives and exposure to professional practice.
You’ll also develop professional career skills such as cultural awareness and an understanding of major societal challenges (climate change and energy transition for example) that engineers have an increasing role in addressing.
Overall, the EFY will prepare you with the knowldege and skills to transition smoothly into your major.
First-year studio
The first-year studio and project rooms reflect contemporary working environments, so that you become familiar with the layout of a professional industry setting. The studio is also a hub to develop social and academic networks. It comprises an open-plan office, computing, electrical and mechanics laboratories, and project meeting rooms.
Years 2–4
Following your EFY, you’ll complete the units that are specific to your major. You can also choose to study specialisations that will either extend or diversify your expertise.
In your final year, you’ll complete an honours-level research project. This experience will give you an in-depth understanding of your minor thesis or project topic. It will also demonstrate to employers your ability to plan and complete a complex project within a specified timeframe.
