Thinking about how to save money at university this year? There’s lots of information out there about how budgeting and getting a second job can bring in some extra cash, but sometimes the solution doesn’t always lie in cutting back on spending or giving up your much-needed study time.

Ever thought about a scholarship? Applying for a scholarship not only allows you to spend more time on studying and living your best #CurtinLife, but it can also give you the upper hand when starting out in your career.

Here are four reasons why you should consider applying for a scholarship this semester.

#1 Sweet, sweet financial relief

One of the most obvious benefits of getting a scholarship is the financial relief it can bring. Scholarships can cover the cost of student-related expenses, such as textbooks, housing or laptops, which means you can stress less about money matters and focus more on succeeding in your studies.

#2 Grow your confidence

Applying for a merit-based scholarship is a great exercise in learning how to sell yourself and recognising your skills, strengths and qualities. After writing a few applications, even if you’re not successful, you’ll likely develop a better understanding of yourself, build your confidence and pick up a bunch of helpful skills (see: written communication, time management, interviewing) through the process.

#3 Not all scholarships are merit-based

We’re strong believers in higher education being accessible to all people, no matter their circumstances. While some scholarships are based on merit, Curtin offers a range of scholarships for students with a variety of needs, for example students experiencing financial hardship, students undertaking compulsory fieldwork and more.

#4 Invest in the now, as well as the future

Scholarships are a strategic investment in your future. Not only do they allow you to invest extra time in your studies now, but having one on your resume can help you stand out to potential employers down the track.

While applying for scholarships can provide you with financial assistance, they can also help you grow your confidence, provide access to opportunities you might not otherwise go for and give you a head start in your career. So as you head towards the start of semester 1, why not consider how applying for a scholarship can support you in your academic journey this year.
