Ransomware attacks are rising across Australian universities, including Curtin. These attacks lock your files and demand payment to unlock them. If your laptop or university account is hit, you could lose access to assignments, research, or even your entire semester’s work.
With new reporting laws now in effect, it’s more important than ever to act fast and stay protected.
Our recommendations:
Back up your work
- Don’t just save files on your laptop, use OneDrive or your J: drive. For research, follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, two types of media, one offsite.
Never pay the attacker
- Paying doesn’t guarantee you’ll get your files back and encourages more attacks. Report incidents to DTS for help.
Stay updated
- Keep your devices and apps updated to fix security holes. Check for updates regularly.
