Building the next generation of ethical thinkers
At Curtin University, the Curtin Centre for Applied Ethics is equipping students with essential critical thinking and ethical reasoning skills through the Ethical and Critical Thinking Challenge, an innovative co-curricular program designed to develop practical reasoning, communication and decision-making capabilities in a world shaped by rapid technological change, global uncertainty and complex social challenges.
A hands-on approach to ethical thinking
The program brings students together in a series of interactive workshops where they explore real-world ethical dilemmas, from artificial intelligence and business ethics to questions of free speech and global responsibility. Each session is designed to move beyond theory, encouraging students to actively engage with complex issues, test their ideas, and learn how to build and communicate well-reasoned arguments.
Participants receive structured guidance and personalised coaching, helping them strengthen both their critical thinking and their ability to present ideas with clarity and confidence.
Learning through collaboration, not competition
Unlike traditional debating formats, the program focuses on collaborative inquiry. Students are encouraged to explore different perspectives, challenge assumptions, and refine their thinking through discussion rather than simply arguing opposing sides.
This approach creates a supportive and intellectually engaging environment, where students learn not only to defend their views, but to understand and respond to the perspectives of others.
A proven and impactful experience
The Ethical and Critical Thinking Challenge builds on the success of Curtin’s Ethics Olympiad program, which has delivered strong outcomes in student engagement, confidence and capability development. Students have reported feeling more confident speaking about complex ethical issues, more open to diverse viewpoints, and better equipped to navigate real-world decision-making.
Open to all disciplines
One of the program’s key strengths is its accessibility. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to participate, bringing diverse perspectives and experiences into the discussion. This approach reflects the reality of today’s challenges where ethical thinking is essential across business, technology, health, policy and beyond.
More than a workshop
Beyond the workshops, students have the opportunity to take part in an optional competition, applying what they’ve learned in a supportive, team-based environment, with prizes awarded at the end. Participants also receive recognition for their involvement in a program designed to develop advanced critical and ethical thinking skills, a valuable addition to their CV and future career pathway.
