We are thrilled to announce that Associate Professor Mandy Downing has been honoured with the prestigious CAS Ally Award for 2024. This annual award, presented by the Centre for Aboriginal Studies (CAS), recognises one Curtin staff member (external to CAS) who has demonstrated a commitment to contributing to positive social change for Indigenous Australians through higher education and research.

Mandy’s nomination came from CAS staff members, who highlighted the significant impact of her work and her dedication to fostering change at Curtin University. The reflections shared by her nominators truly capture the essence of her advocacy and leadership:
“Mandy holds no punches when it comes to decolonising Curtin University and is a strong advocate for social change. Over time, I believe this institution will lead Australia in being inclusive of First Nations knowledge and protocol because of people like her.”
“Her specific work in ethics is truly groundbreaking, and she deserves every acknowledgement. She’s also a graduate from CAS.”
“Mandy is an ally to CAS and a valued member of Indigenous staff across Curtin. Her collaboration with CAS and other areas of the university shows her commitment to Indigenous students’ success. A leader in her own right, she exemplifies Indigenous ways of doing, being, and thinking.”
Mandy’s tireless advocacy, leadership, and deep respect for Indigenous knowledge continue to leave a lasting impact across the university. Her work is a testament to the ongoing need for decolonisation and the importance of Indigenous perspectives within academia.
We extend our warm congratulations to Associate Professor Mandy Downing for this well-deserved recognition, and we look forward to the continued positive influence she will have in shaping the future of Curtin University and beyond.
