The Master of Teaching is designed for people seeking to obtain an initial teacher education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and/or in a country that recognises Australian teaching qualifications.
The course may also be suitable for qualified teachers wishing to gain an additional formal qualification (if needed) to convert to either Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary Education.

Professional accreditation and recognition
This course is recognised nationally as an initial pre-service teaching qualification. Initial Teacher Education courses in Australia are accredited by the relevant authority in the state or territory in which the institution providing the qualification is based.
Accordingly, the Master of Teaching course provided by Curtin University is fully accredited by the Teachers’ Registration Board of WA (TRBWA) and graduates of the course are able to register as practising teachers with the registration body in their home state or territory, based on the course accreditation provided by the TRBWA.

What you’ll learn
In the Master of Teaching you will gain advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education, to meet the needs of today’s learners.
You will also have opportunities to undertake professional experience, culminating in a professional placement during your final year of study.

The Master of Teaching offers three majors:
Study periods
Instead of being delivered in semesters, the Master of Teaching is delivered across four study periods each year:
- Special Study Period 1: March–May
- Special Study Period 2: June–August
- Special Study Period 3: September–November
- Special Study Period 4: December–February
The Master of Teaching (Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary) course is an intensive course; therefore, there are no substantial breaks between or within study sessions in the course.

Entry requirements
You must have a bachelor degree or equivalent from a recognised institution, with at least one year of study in an area relating to the early years, or the primary or secondary curricula. Specifically, a major teaching area equivalent to a total of three-quarters of a year of successful EFTSL, comprising of sequential discipline study. This equates to six units, with no more than two at first-year level and no fewer than two units at third-year level. Applicants wishing to qualify with a minor teaching area must also have equivalent to a total of half a year of successful EFTSL, comprising of sequential discipline study. This equates to four units, with no more than two at first-year level. Applicants may be eligible for entry based on previous studies in a major teaching area only.
Applicants will also be required to engage in assessment of non-academic attributes in order to reflect on their suitability for teaching. Students will be responsible for meeting any costs associated with this assessment process.
You also need to meet a minimum standard of English Language Proficiency, as you are required to teach others in English during your professional experience placements.
Entry to this course will not be possible based on work experience alone. This is consistent with current practice for courses in the School of Education. This course is not suitable for qualified Secondary teachers wishing to change their subject specialisation.
