The Earth and Planetary Sciences Honours Major (BSc) (Honours) enables students to extend knowledge of current academic research methodology as it is applied in the field of Earth and Planetary Sciences and related fields, and to demonstrate this through undertaking a supervised research project and the preparation of an honours dissertation.

What you'll learn

  • have demonstrated knowledge and understanding in the Earth and planetary sciences field of study that is at a level that is informed by knowledge of the forefront of the field of study, within a research context.
  • can apply their knowledge and understanding in a manner that indicates a professional approach to Earth and planetary sciences, and have competencies demonstrated through devising and sustaining arguments (to both specialist and non-specialist audiences) and solving advanced problems within their Earth and Planetary Sciences field of study.
  • understand the constructs of the scientific method and apply these principles in the Earth and Planetary Sciences field of study by communicating new knowledge, including using digital technologies.
  • can gather and interpret relevant research data within the Earth and planetary sciences field of study to inform judgements that include reflection on relevant social, scientific or ethical issues, including being aware of the diversity of international perspectives associated with the Earth and planetary sciences field of study, and how these impact upon the practice of the Earth and planetary sciences.
  • understand the global and cultural issues within the Earth and Planetary Sciences field of study and how these impact on the practice of professions in this field.
  • display a very high standard of professional behaviour, complying with applicable legislation and including effective time management, both independently and as a team member.
