In this course, you will gain the comprehensive knowledge and skills required to practise midwifery. Your studies will include topics across biological, physical, psychological and social sciences.

This course is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council and approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

You have left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e. who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then.

How we define ‘experience’

‘Experience’ includes a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education such as mature-age entry, professional experience whether completion of the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is required or not, community involvement or work experience. Applicants may have undertaken non-formal programs that have helped prepare them for tertiary education or are relevant to the proposed higher education field of study.

You’re considered someone who has recently left university if:

Applicants with higher education are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a higher education course, such as a university degree. This may include applicants who are currently studying a higher education course at another education provider and want to transfer to Curtin University, or applicants who are currently studying at Curtin but want to switch to a different course. It may also include applicants who have completed past study with university and non-university higher education providers.

Curtin course switcher criteria

To switch into this course as a current Curtin student, you need to have:

completed a minimum of 100 credits; and
have achieved an average of 70% or higher in the four most recent units studied; and
be on good standing in the most recent course studied.

Higher education course switcher criteria

Switching into this course from another higher education course provider is only available in Semester one.

A minimum ATAR/ Selection Rank of 80 is required

Ranking and Selection Process

Entry to this course is competitive, with limited places available.

Please note:

Applicants will be ranked and selected based on published entry requirements and entire academic record.
Applicants must provide all required documents and be assessed as eligible to be included in the ranking for an offer.
Meeting the minimum entry requirements and course specific prerequisites, does not guarantee selection.
Applicants with outstanding results will only be considered for an offer upon submission of the results.
Eligible applicants will remain in the ranking pool until the conclusion of all offer rounds.
In the event the course reaches capacity the University reserves the right not to proceed with subsequent offer rounds.

Students graduating from the Bachelor of Science (Midwifery) course will need to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to register to work in this profession. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia works to ensure that Australia’s midwives are suitably trained, qualified and safe to practice. Their priority is public safety. Students should be familiar with these requirements which may impact their progression throughout their studies and in entering the profession.

In addition to meeting the Curtin English requirements for admission, the NMBA requires all applicants for initial registration to demonstrate English language skills to be suitable for registration - https://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/Registration-Standards/English-language-skills.aspx

It is a condition of enrolment that applicants complete criminal record screening and clearances, basic professional certifications and screening and immunisations for a number of infectious illnesses prior to the commencement of the course. You will need to keep these requirements current during your course. You are responsible for the cost of these. Further information on requirements for fieldwork for students in the Faculty of Health Sciences can be obtained by visiting the website https://study.curtin.edu.au/applying/fieldwork-statements/.

You must be available to undertake clinical practice during and/or outside semester in health care facilities. You must also be available to work rotational shift work, including morning, afternoon and nightshift.

A break from study of more than one semester may incur additional clinical practice.
