General English

Upon completion of this course, you’ll have an intermediate understanding of English, ready to take your abilities to the next level before applying yourself in academic situations.

Your Curtin English pathway to Curtin University – General English

When you study General English, you’ll develop your English language skills across four core areas – reading, writing, listening and speaking – in everyday situations.

General English is for students with IELTS scores of 3.0 and above. Once you finish this course, you’ll transition to Gateway English which will aim to increase your English proficiency further.

General English 1

General English 1 is offered full-time in-person at our partner institution Navitas English.

You will need an overall IELTS score of 3.0 or equivalent for entry. After completing your course, you will transfer to General English 2.
This stream runs for 20 weeks with 20 contact hours per week.

General English 2

General English 2 is offered full-time in-person at our partner institution Navitas English.

An IELTS score of 4.0 or equivalent is required for direct entry into General English 2. You will transfer into the Gateway English program after completing your course.
This stream runs for 20 weeks with 20 contact hours per week.

What you’ll learn

The General English curriculum will teach you the four core skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing with a focus on:

  • building fluency and accuracy in spoken and written English
  • expanding your vocabulary
  • understanding native and non-native English speakers
  • developing skills and confidence to use English outside the classroom

Requirements to pass

There is a range of different assessments during the course which will assess your skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening. The grade which you require to move on to the next stage of your learning will be stated in your letter of offer.

Unsure of your English skill level? Curtin English can provide a free online placement test, known as Password, to determine your current level of English and then to plan your pathway. This can be done through a Curtin registered agent or partner.
