Producing high-quality biocarbon from biomass for green iron and steelmaking

The global iron and steel industry is shifting from blast furnace technology that relies on fossil carbon to low-emission direct reduction (DR) technologies that use hydrogen as reductant to produce direct reduced iron (DRI) for subsequent processing in electric arc furnace (EAF) or electric smelting furnace (ESF). Although hydrogen can serve as a carbon-free reductant in these processes, carbon remains essential in iron and steel production. It is therefore critical to produce high-quality biocarbon from renewable biomass or carbonaceous wastes that meets the requirements for applications in EAF and ESF.

Aim  

The overall aim of this project is to generate new knowledge on the thermochemical processing of biomass to produce biocarbon with the physical, chemical, thermal, electrical and reaction properties required for use in EAF and ESF applications.

Objectives 

1) to systematically study the thermal behaviour of key biomass materials available in Australia under a range of processing conditions
2) to characterise the properties of biocarbon products produced under different conditions
3) to optimise the key parameters that govern biocarbon production and product properties

Significance 

This PhD project will make an important contribution to understanding how Australia’s abundant biomass resources can be used to produce high-quality biocarbon for next-generation low-emission ironmaking processes. This is of national significance, particularly for rural and regional Australia, where biomass resources are plentiful.

Ideal Candidate 

We seek a self-motivated PhD candidate with strong organisational, problem-solving and laboratory skills. A background in chemical engineering or a closely related discipline is preferred, and prior research experience in biomass and bioenergy will be highly regarded. Additionally, the applicants should meet the eligibility criteria for entry into a PhD program at Curtin University.
