Cerebral Aneurysms are sac-like outgrowths in cerebral arteries that grow and lead to cerebrovascular disease. Understanding the flow in aneurysms from an engineering point of view will enable the creation of prediction tools that will aid in the clinical diagnosis of these conditions.
Aim
To study the effect of wall shear stress and flow mechanics in contributing to the growth of cerebral aneurysms, and to create a diagnostic support tool for clinicians.
Objectives
The work involves the creation of a computational fluid dynamics model of the aneurysm as well as the design of an in-vitro model, this model will then be used for experimental studies in the laboratory using particle image velocimetry. The PhD research consists of a computational study and an experimental validation.
Significance
CAs cause health related issues especially for the elderly population. A engineering-based predictive tool will aid the clinicians during the diagnosis of this disease. This tool, created out of the PhD research will help to understand the fundamental importance of wall shear, besides helping to preserve resources, minimize surgeries and overall contribute to the health and well-being of the community through better informed diagnosis.
Ideal Candidate
Highly motivated First Class honours undergraduate degree holders in Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Biomedical Engineering. Additionally, the applicants should meet the eligibility criteria for entry into a PhD program at Curtin University.
This project is open to International and Domestic applicants.
