Australian Innovation Festival Public Information Session
Healthy Junk Food for Your Family?

Monday 12 May 2008
5.30pm – 7pm
Building 213
Curtin University of Technology
Kent Street, Bentley

Healthy refreshments will follow the session

As part of the 2008 Australian Innovation Festival, Curtin University of Technology will present a free public information session on how families can benefit from a range of novel healthy foods that can be used as alternatives to popular junk foods.

Curtin’s Associate Professor Vijay Jayasena (Food Scientist) and Katherine Bathgate (Dietitian) from the School of Public Health will present at the session.

Professor Jayasena will explain the benefits offered by these alternative novel healthy foods, particularly in relation to the obesity epidemic that is plaguing Australia, and how it is important that families make better food choices. He will help families identify healthy alternatives, particularly when wholesome snack foods are difficult to find.

Curtin researchers have identified affordable foods that are low in fat and sugar, high in protein and fibre, and tasty enough to be used as alternatives to the popular junk food.

Samples of the new foods will be available for tasting during the event.

The Australian Innovation Festival was established in 2002 to celebrate Australian Innovation. Its vision is to increase public awareness of the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship through a renewed emphasis on the three pillars of economic growth – excellence in research, development and commercialisation.
