The first Ray Finlayson Medal for Leadership and Academic Excellence will be presented at the Dealers and Diggers Conference dinner on 6 August. The award will honour a student who is both achieving academically and who contributes to the broader community.

The medal honours the late Mr Finlayson, who served as Mayor of Kalgoorlie from 1976 to 1989, before being elected as the first mayor of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. He was awarded the Order of Australia medal in 1984 and was also WA Citizen of the Year in 1980.

Mr Finlayson was appointed to the Board of Management of the WA School of Mines in 1983 and worked tirelessly to promote the school. His daughter, Leonie Hicks, says this medal will reflect “the most outstanding Kalgoorlie-based student demonstrating both leadership and academic excellence”.
