How the program works

Curtin’s PhD internship program is designed to be flexible, supported and outcomes-focused. Internships typically run 3-6 months, are aligned to the student’s research area, and are available across all disciplines.

  1. Explore opportunities
Students and supervisors identify an industry-aligned research project that complements the PhD.
  2. Match and agree
Curtin works with partners to confirm scope, timelines and formal agreements.
  3. Undertake the internship
The student completes the research internship alongside their PhD enrolment, with flexible delivery options.
  4. Deliver outcomes
Internships deliver benefits for students, supervisors and partner organisations, and may lead to future collaboration.

Success Stories

Pioneering health innovation

Melissa Papini completed a PhD internship with The Sherpah Clinic, a dynamic health innovation company providing evidence-based rTMS therapy for treatment-resistant depression, anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD and chronic pain.

“It’s given me the confidence to see that moving into industry doesn’t mean leaving academia behind. There’s real scope to keep contributing to scientific research in an industry role. Ideally, I’d like to keep one foot in academia and the other in industry. The two worlds have so much to offer each other.”

From Radio Astronomy to Neurosurgical Devices

Through an industry internship discovered via UniHub, Essam Morsy undertook a placement with Neurospheric as part of the iPREP Biodesign Internship program. The project centred on developing a proof of concept for a neurosurgical device aimed at enabling minimally invasive tumour resection in sensitive brain areas.

“For any PhD student considering an industry internship, I highly recommend it. The experience broadens your perspective, enhances career prospects, and offers valuable exposure to industry-driven problem-solving.”

Reviewing Sentient’s VR experiences

Bruno Hernandez, a PhD student who looks at the use of Virtual Reality (VR) in science education, joined the tech company Sentient Computing as a research intern, providing him with a unique opportunity to observe how VR projects are managed in the industry and taken from beginning to end.

“I’ve had the opportunity to expand my professional network by meeting clients and talking to co-workers and have really enjoyed the possibility of providing value using the skills I have acquired during my academic career.”

Next steps: engage a Curtin PhD intern

Want to take part in Curtin’s PhD internship program? Here are your next steps:

  1. Scope one or a series of projects that addresses a problem in your industry where the research question is suitable for a PhD student to address in sixty working days. The research can be completed all at once, or in stages.
  2. Please provide us with your project brief in the form of a single page description, including your preferred timing, and send to ROC.Excellence@curtin.edu.au. Curtin University will advertise your project to prospective interns and their supervisors, and you may meet with the students to ensure they are suitable.
  3. Curtin University will provide you with a contract template to initiate the internship. The contract must be in place before the student can commence the internship. Projects can commence at any point throughout the year. Contracts are available for a single student, or a series of students across multiple years.
