Building sustainable marking practice
Assessment is a vehicle for judging learning progress and giving students feedback they can act on. How we mark, and how we explain that judgement, deeply shapes students’ experiences.
This guide brings marking and feedback into the same conversation as assessment design. It helps you design assessment that gathers trustworthy evidence of learning without generating more marking than a unit can sustain, estimate marking workload early enough to act on it, and plan marking, moderation and resourcing as a shared conversation across your team.
Grounded in scholarship on sustainable assessment and feedback literacy, the guide sets out twelve guiding principles alongside two fully worked examples, a group interactive oral and a series of lab reports, showing the design rationale, marking-time estimates, moderation plans and sample feedback in practice.
