What do employers really look for when hiring graduates?
That’s the question more than 80 students explored at the recent FBL Recruitment Panel & Networking Event, where they had the opportunity to hear directly from recruitment and talent professionals from EY Australia, KPMG Australia, Hancock Iron Ore and TalentED Solutions.
The evening provided students with a unique chance to gain insider advice on graduate recruitment, learn what makes candidates stand out, and connect with industry professionals in a relaxed networking environment.
There’s no single path to success
One of the most reassuring messages from the panel was that career journeys don’t always follow a straight line.
Panellists shared their own experiences and highlighted that it’s okay not to have every step of your career mapped out. Being open to opportunities, trying new experiences and staying curious can often lead to unexpected and rewarding career pathways.
Employers are looking beyond your transcript
While academic results are important, the panel emphasised that employers are also looking for evidence of skills and experiences outside the classroom.
Whether it’s part-time work, volunteering, student leadership, internships, competitions or club involvement, these experiences can help students develop valuable transferable skills and demonstrate their ability to contribute in the workplace.

Students were encouraged not to wait until graduation to start making professional connections.
The panel highlighted the value of attending events, asking questions and having conversations with industry professionals to learn more about different career paths and opportunities.
The networking session that followed gave students the chance to put this advice into action, connecting directly with employers and gaining insights into recruitment processes, graduate programs and industry expectations.
The skills that help graduates stand out
Across all industries represented on the panel, several qualities consistently stood out.
Communication, initiative, adaptability and a positive attitude were identified as traits that employers highly value when assessing candidates. While technical knowledge can be taught, these professional skills can often make a lasting impression.
