Moving to a new city for uni is already a big step. Moving to Kalgoorlie? That can feel like a whole new adventure.
It’s smaller than Perth, over 400 kilometres from the nearest ocean, and has its own rhythm, routine and student life. But if you’re heading to Curtin Kalgoorlie, there are a few simple things you can do early to make settling in much easier.
And in the latest episode of I’m at Curtin, Now What?, Nayla and Joshua are here to help you do exactly that.
Sorry Musa and Kristel, but the Kalgoorlie team have officially taken over this episode.
Start with your arrival plan
Before you arrive, it’s worth thinking through how you’ll actually get to Kalgoorlie and what happens once you’re there.
Whether you’re travelling by train, flying in or getting picked up by someone, having a rough plan can save you from arriving tired, hungry and unsure where to go next.
The new episode gives you a quick look at what arrival can look like, including how close key places are and what to keep in mind if you’re bringing luggage.
Basically, future you will be very grateful if present you does a little planning.
Pack smart, not your whole room
If you’re moving into accommodation, it can be tempting to pack everything you own.
But before you try to bring your entire bedroom with you, remember that you can pick up a lot of your essentials after you arrive. Think bedding, towels, hangers, kitchen basics and the things that suddenly become important when you realise your room does not magically come with a pillow.
Nayla and Joshua show you where to start, without spoiling the full first-day checklist.
Know where to get the essentials
One of the best things about Kalgoorlie is that a lot of the basics are close by.
Banks, groceries, accommodation essentials and food options are all things you’ll want to figure out early, especially if you’re arriving from overseas or moving out of home for the first time.
It’s also a good idea to check opening hours before you go shopping, because Kalgoorlie can run a little differently to Perth.
The episode gives you a handy walkthrough of what to sort first, so you’re not left panic-Googling with an empty fridge.
Explore once you’ve settled in
Once your room is set up and your groceries are sorted, make time to actually explore.
Kalgoorlie has a lot of character, from local cafés and pubs to iconic spots that are very, very Kalgoorlie. Nayla and Joshua also share a few places worth checking out when you’re ready to get outside and see more than just your room, the shops and campus.
We won’t spoil the full list here, but let’s just say Perth definitely does not have everything Kalgoorlie has.
Ask for help early
Settling into a new place can feel exciting, but it can also feel confusing at first.
If you’re unsure where to go, what to do or how to settle into life at Curtin Kalgoorlie, you don’t have to figure it all out alone. Talk to other students, ask Curtin staff for help and give yourself time to adjust.
Everyone’s first few days look a little different, and that’s completely normal.
