Did you know English is not Australia’s only language?
In the latest episode of I’m at Curtin, Now What?, Musa meets Curtin student Bianca at the Yarning Circle to learn beginner Noongar words every student should know.
Together, they explore the meaning behind words you may hear around Curtin and across Boorloo/Perth, including words connected to place, Country, community and home.
The episode is a friendly starting point for students who want to better understand the language and Country they are studying on. Bianca also shares how learning Noongar language has helped her reconnect with culture, while Musa brings his own international student perspective to the conversation.
For many students, arriving at Curtin means learning a new campus, a new city and sometimes a new country. This episode is a reminder that learning about Australia also means learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and languages.
Watch the episode to learn a few Noongar words, hear why they matter and find out which Malay words Musa teaches Bianca in return.
