From learning Aussie slang to enjoying Tim Tams and building new friendships, new international students from Curtin’s Faculty of Business and Law were welcomed to campus at the Let’s Connect and Let’s Work workshops on 10 July.
Designed to help students feel at home from day one, the workshops gave attendees the chance to meet new people, discover the support available to them and gain practical skills to prepare for working in Australia.
Breaking the ice at Let’s Connect
The morning began with Let’s Connect, where students met the Faculty of Business and Law Student Engagement team and connected with classmates from around the world.
The room was buzzing as students took on Friend Bingo, shared stories and got to know one another, turning unfamiliar faces into new connections.
Along the way, students explored ways to navigate culture shock, picked up some classic Aussie slang and discovered the support services available throughout their Curtin journey.
Of course, no Australian welcome is complete without food! Students sampled iconic Aussie favourites including Tim Tams, fairy bread, lamingtons and other local treats while chatting over lunch.
Getting job-ready with Let’s Work
In the afternoon, it was time to turn connections into confidence with Let’s Work, a hands-on workshop designed to help students navigate the Australian job market.
Students learned how to create an Australian-style resume, understand their workplace rights and responsibilities, and uncover practical strategies for finding casual work, internships and future career opportunities.
Whether preparing for a first part-time job or planning for life after graduation, students left with practical tips, valuable resources and greater confidence to take their next career step.
Here’s to an exciting semester ahead!
Starting university in a new country is a big adventure, but students won’t be doing it alone. From making new friends to preparing for future careers, Let’s Connect and Let’s Work were just the beginning.
A warm welcome to all of our new international students to the faculty this semester. We can’t wait to see you thrive, make the most of every opportunity and create unforgettable memories during your time at Curtin.
