Today, the Western Australian Government announced it is undertaking a business case into merging Curtin University, Murdoch University and The University of Western Australia.
I know many of you will have questions about what this means for you. The most important thing I want you to know is that Curtin continues to operate as normal. There are no changes to your studies, your degree, your classes, your assessments, or your student experience.
Today’s development is the beginning of a very long process, not a final decision. To be clear, Curtin does not support a forced merger and has consistently raised its concerns around costs, disruption and risk. We believe Western Australia is best served by strong, independent universities working together to support students, innovative research and a thriving future for our State.
I know the Curtin and Murdoch Student Guilds have already expressed their concerns about any potential mergers. Curtin is a university built around opportunity and community. We are proud of the quality of our teaching, our strong industry connections, our global outlook and our diversity, and we believe these strengths are worth protecting.
There may be media on this topic in the months ahead. We will continue to keep you informed and I encourage you to follow official Curtin channels to stay up-to-date. We will also continue to advocate strongly for our students and for the future of Curtin.
In the meantime, our focus remains on providing a great student experience, supporting your success and helping you achieve your goals.
Kind regards,
Professor Harlene Hayne
Vice-Chancellor
