Curtin Sport and Recreation is proud to introduce the coaches leading the Curtin Carnabys for the 2026 University Basketball League season.

With decades of experience across professional, collegiate, and international basketball, Fiona Hannan and David Petroziello bring a wealth of knowledge, leadership, and passion to the program.

Their combined backgrounds span elite playing careers, high-performance coaching, and global competition, setting a strong foundation for the Carnabys as they prepare to compete on the national stage.

Fiona Hannan, Curtin Carnabys Women’s Head Coach

Fiona will lead the women’s team, bringing a unique perspective shaped by a 20-year professional playing career and two decades of coaching experience. She was part of the Australian Opals team that won their first ever international medal with Olympic Bronze in Atlanta. Her background includes coaching junior state teams in Western Australia and NBL1 women’s teams in Queensland, and she is currently an Assistant Coach for the Perth Redbacks NBL1 Men’s team.

“I like to build the expectations of behaviour and play style early in a program and then provide a lot of freedom for players to express their own particular skill sets and strengths on the floor.”

With a strong focus on creating an engaging and empowering team environment, Fiona is excited to bring together a new group of student-athletes to represent Curtin.

“I am really excited to work with a group of young women from a range of basketball clubs brought together to represent the University.”

David Petroziello, Curtin Carnabys Men’s Head Coach

David will lead the men’s team, bringing nearly 30 years of coaching experience across Canada, Australia, Europe, and Asia. His career spans Division 1 and 2 college basketball, professional leagues, and high-performance programs, alongside involvement in national team structures and coach education internationally.

Having followed the league since its inception, David is eager to contribute to Curtin’s program and the broader university pathway.

“Coaching is about wayfinding, helping chart a route to success which others may not see themselves.”

With a strong belief in the role of university sport within the basketball pathway, David is looking forward to the opportunity ahead.

“I am thrilled to be coaching the Curtin Carnabys for UBL 2026.”

The New Balance University Basketball League (UBL) is a national university competition featuring both men’s and women’s divisions, providing student-athletes with the opportunity to compete at a high level while representing their university.
