Message from the VC: Creating a safe work and study environment

In light of recent reports of alleged cases of sexual assault in the workplace I would like to reaffirm Curtin’s commitment to creating a safe place for everyone to work and study.

The University has embraced a number of best practice approaches and supports important campaigns such as Respect. Now. AlwaysOur Watch and 16 Days in WA – Stop Violence Against Women,  among others.

All new students commencing at Curtin are required to complete the Respectful Relationships online training program. If you have not yet completed the program, we strongly encourage all students at our Australian campuses to access the program through Curtin Challenge.

We aim to create an environment where all people, especially women, are not only safe but are also respected, valued and treated as equals.

If you are aware of, or have experienced an incident of sexual assault, harassment or violence, have seen something that shouldn’t be happening, or feel unsafe, please report it to the Curtin Safer Community Team.  They are available 24/7 and will offer support and liaise with other agencies as appropriate. Reports can be made anonymously.

Safer Community can also support members of the Curtin community who report historical incidents or those which did not take place on a Curtin campus.  Support is also available through Curtin’s Psychological and Counselling Services for students who have found the recent media stories disturbing or triggering.

In an emergency:

  • Contact Police on “000” or dial “0000” from an internal Curtin phone.
  • Contact the Curtin Safer Community Team+61 8 9266 4444.
  • If you are on the Perth or Kalgoorlie campuses, use the SafeZone Security App to trigger an immediate response from the Safer Community Team without alerting an assailant.
  • If you are on University supported activities interstate or overseas, ring International SOS on +61 2 9372 2468 and quote Membership No. 12AYCA656047.
