High profile politician and former Attorney General Christian Porter will take up an appointment shortly as Professor of Law to teach next year at WA’s newest law school at Curtin University.

Foundation Dean Professor Paul Fairall said the appointment was the first of a series of outstanding appointments to the new law school aimed at revitalising legal education in Western Australia.

As Director of Professional Programs, Professor Porter would assume responsibility for establishing legal engagement in downtown Perth, bringing together students, legal practitioners and clients under one roof for the Law School’s first year in 2013.

“The old days of teaching law in splendid isolation from the real world of practice are dead,” said Professor Fairall.

Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jeanette Hacket said that Mr Porter’s appointment would be of great value to both students and the University as a whole.

“Mr Porter brings a wealth of ministerial, parliamentary and legal experience to our newly established Curtin School of Law.  Being taught by a former Attorney General will be a privilege for our inaugural law students,” Professor Hacket said.

Mr Porter said that he was delighted at the opportunity to contribute to the legal profession in such a positive way.

“I’m looking forward to working with Professor Fairall to integrate and expand Curtin School of Law’s presence and network within the legal profession,” Mr Porter said.

Curtin’s Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree will provide students with flexible study pathways, such as the option to complete a variety of double degree programs that are specifically focused on the needs of industry, including units focusing on the resources sector and governance issues.

Curtin Law will take 120 high achieving students in first semester 2013.
