A Professor at Curtin’s Health Sciences has been announced as WA’s nurse researcher of the year.

Professor Gavin Leslie, from Shelley, picked up the Research and Innovative Practice Excellence Award at the annual Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards held at the Burswood Entertainment Complex on Saturday 9 October 2010.

The winner, who is Director of Research and Development at Curtin’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, was named ahead of three other finalists to receive the award for his research achievements in critical care nursing and practice.

Professor Leslie also received the accolade for a range of professional roles that he undertakes including editing the Australian Critical Care journal.

Professor Phillip Della, Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, said everyone was proud of Professor Leslie’s outstanding achievement.

“We don’t often hear about the vital research and innovation that nurse researchers undertake. It is an essential component of the healthcare system. Nursing research helps to bring about new changes in the life-long care of patients and is used to develop advancements that aid patients in their recovery, and increases their quality of life,” Professor Della said.

Professor Leslie said winning the award was a great honour as it recognised his contribution to the profession, but also acknowledged the efforts of the team of academics and researchers that he works alongside.

“I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to this award – staff at the School of Nursing and Midwifery for their continuous support and for generously nominating me for the award,” Professor Leslie said.

“With my joint appointment at Royal Perth Hospital, I’d like to recognise my research colleague, Dr Teresa Williams. I’d also like to thank the Nursing Director of the Critical Care Division, Linda Brearley, for her great support, and the Postgraduate, Education Centre and Critical Care Division staff at RPH.

“And of course I thank my family who have always provided me with a grounded view of the world throughout my career.”

More than 200 candidates were nominated for the 2010 awards across all categories.
