Curtin University has appointed Professor Graeme Wright to the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Development (DVC R&D).

Professor Wright has worked at Curtin since the 1990s, fulfilling a number of high-profile leadership and executive roles, with a strong focus on teaching, learning and strategic research and development.

Professor Wright’s new position as DVC R&D will include the oversight of all research, research training, and commercialisation and knowledge transfer activities within the University.

Professor Wright said he welcomed his new appointment as it would allow him to continue his work towards enhancing and strengthening Curtin’s vision and strategic leadership for key research and IP commercialisation activities across the University.

“Part of my role will include directing a team of senior research managers engaged with key researchers across the University to deliver on the Curtin Strategic Plan and Research Management Plan,” Professor Wright said.

“This team is essential for enhancing the planning and decision making capabilities needed to boost research endeavours within Curtin, and at the same time, contributes to the development of an integrated structure to achieve our research goals and deliver enhanced research performance.

“A large portion of my work will also closely focus on developing and maintaining both internal and external research networks, as well as monitoring and responding to government research policy.”

Professor Wright began his career at Curtin University in 1991 as a lecturer in spatial sciences, before obtaining his PhD in the same discipline in 2000. In 2004, he was appointed Head of Spatial Sciences where he guided the strategic directions of R&D and Teaching and Learning within the School.

Since then, Professor Wright has held senior roles at Curtin University, including Executive Dean of the Faculty of Resources and Environment, Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research Training and now DVC R&D.  He has broad knowledge and experience in education and research, and engagement with higher education policy at strategic level.

Professor Wright has extensive experience on Boards and Committees of research centres and CRCs, liaison with industry, and broad research knowledge in spatial information sciences.  He is also currently a Curtin representative on several successful research centre boards, including the Rio Tinto Centre for Materials and Sensing in Mining, the Centre for Exploration Targeting, and a non-executive Director of the CRC for Spatial Information
