Lupin and fruit slice, chia fettuccine, cheesy potato balls, macadamia and rose shortbread, banana snack, Chinese-style ice-cream and chia muesli snack are just some of the innovative food products created by Curtin University students for the second annual Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) Awards.
The 2010 DAFWA Student Food and Beverage Product Development Awards, on Thursday 11 November, will recognise the most innovative new food products created by Curtin’s third year food science and technology students.
Minister for Agriculture and Food Western Australia, Terry Redman will be presenting awards to the winning student teams.
Dr Ranil Coorey of Curtin’s School of Public Health said he was very impressed with the new products the students had developed as part of the Food Processing and Preservation units.
“The students have been very creative and a lot of the food they have produced is at a standard where it could be taken further and commercialised,” Dr Ranil Coorey said.
“They have also shown a great level of skill and matured over this semester and will perform extremely well in the food industry as professionals.”
The Food Processing and Preservation units have been introduced to meet industry demand for skilled professionals who could create and develop new consumer products.
“Curtin is still the only university in WA to offer food science and technology as an undergraduate degree and we have strong ties to the local food industry,” he said.
This year 14 new products have been created by 36 students in 14 teams that will be evaluated for the awards.
The awards will be held on Thursday 11 November from 10.30am – 12.00pm at Curtin’s Bentley campus.
Finished inventive food products developed by the students will be on display.
