During a routine chemical waste disposal check a quantity of a chemical labelled Celloidin was identified at Curtin University’s Bentley Campus.

As this substance has a medium risk of explosion, police and emergency services were immediately called and took control of that area of the campus.

Nearby buildings and the surrounding area were evacuated as a precaution.

The issue was managed according to Curtin’s established procedures and the campus community was kept advised of what was happening.

The chemical has now been removed from campus and the area declared safe.  A review into the matter will be undertaken by the University.
