Curtin’s ongoing commitment to teaching and research at its Kalgoorlie campus has been demonstrated with the addition of a new rock and soils laboratory.

Located on the ground floor of the chemistry building, the rocks and soils lab was completely refurbished over a period of five months, with an investment of just over half a million dollars. The laboratory, under the guidance of Professor Roger Thompson, is an essential component for students studying rock and soil testing and has been in use since April.

The labs will provide exposure to rock testing systems such as digital point load testing and uniaxial testing, and soil testing systems like soil particle size distribution, giving students hands-on experience with industry relevant equipment, which will ultimately make them more desirable to employers.
