Retired Australian slow bowler Brad Hogg will spin into Curtin this month to support a cricket match raising cash for the victims of the Pakistan floods disaster.

The match between Pakistani and other cricketers associated with the university is part of the four-pronged Helping Hand for Pakistan program arranged by the Curtin Student Guild, Curtin College and Curtin Community Projects.

“This is the first time the three groups have gotten together to organise something like this,” Curtin Community Projects spokeswoman Maureen Meredith said.

“The match will definitely be competitive and it’s for such a good cause.”

The floods have killed 1600 people and destroyed 750,000 houses in Pakistan.

Ms Meredith said that 20 million people had been affected by the disaster – more than in the Haiti and Kashmir earthquakes and Indian Ocean tsunami combined.

The 20/20 ‘Curtin vs Pakistan’ match will take place at Barblett Oval between 11am and 2pm Wednesday, September 15.

Ms Meredith said Hogg would not be turning his arm over at the carnival atmosphere event but would likely participate in a prize-presenting capacity.

Funds raised will be split between several charities working for flood victims.

Helping Hand for Pakistan is also:

  • raffling a Nintendo Wii with two games, and many other prizes – $2 for one ticket or three tickets for $5;
  • hosting a quiz night in the main cafe, 6pm for a 6.30pm start (Tickets on sale from Student Guild reception; and
  • throwing an all-day fundraiser on September 15, starting with breakfast outside the Guild (gold coin donation).

“I’m looking for volunteers that can shake collection tins all through the campus, all day,” Ms Meredith said of the September 15 appeal.

Anyone wishing do this, donate a prize for the quiz night or sell or buy raffle tickets should contact Ms Meredith on 9266 2118/0401 103 154 or at m.meredith@curtin.edu.au.
