Connecting, mentoring and making a difference
After experiencing the physical and psychological toll of life on the frontline, Curtin paramedicine graduate Karen Hollings turned her recovery into a mission to support others.
Through her charity, Dogs for First Responders, Karen and her team provide peer-led mental health support and trained therapy dogs to emergency service workers; helping bridge the gap between facing trauma and seeking help.
Our Child and Adolescent Health students recently had the opportunity to hear from three incredible mentors during a panel-style mentoring event last week.
Drawing on their diverse professional backgrounds, the mentors shared their experiences of working in child and adolescent nursing, supporting families and navigating different career pathways. We are incredibly grateful to our mentors for generously sharing their time, knowledge and encouragement with the next generation of nurses.
Congratulations to Isabella Chalker, a participant in the 2024 Rising Scholarship Healthcare Program, and recipient of the Department of Communities Young Women Leader Award at the 2026 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards WA.
Isabella was recognised for her advocacy for women, girls and regional communities, including coordinating 100 birthing kits, contributing to discussions on healthcare access and leading the Regional Ambulance Service Bill as WA Youth Minister for Health and Mental Health.
Curtinβs Alumni Mentoring Program brings together graduates at different career stages to share insights, build meaningful connections and support one anotherβs professional development.

Curtin Clinic Cockburn is accepting new referrals for their Dietetics, Psychology and Speech Pathology services for the upcoming semester. They will be providing free consultations for adults either in person or via telehealth.
Services support a range of nutrition, wellbeing, communication and swallowing needs, with personalised care provided through supervised student clinics.
Future health professionals making a difference
The Goldfields University Department of Rural Health marked National Reconciliation Week through shared learning, reflection and connection with local Elders and Country. The activities strengthened studentsβ understanding of Aboriginal culture and culturally safe practice in rural and remote communities.Β
From discovery to better patient outcomes
Curtinβs Associate Professor Laurence Cheung has been named Cure Cancerβs 2026 Researcher of the Year for his groundbreaking work developing safer and more effective treatments for children with high-risk leukaemia.
Promising tools designed to identify people at risk of serious health conditions are rarely making their way into everyday patient care, according to new Curtin research. Researchers are calling for greater investment in integrating proven technologies into routine healthcare to support earlier intervention, healthier ageing and reduced pressure on the health system.
Almost half of dementia cases could be prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors, but new Curtin research suggests awareness alone is not enough. More personalised and community-led approaches are needed to create lasting behaviour change.
New global standards co-developed by Curtin researchers aim to improve the quality, consistency and accessibility of rehabilitation for stroke survivors worldwide. The standards provide health systems with practical guidance to strengthen recovery support, particularly in countries where access to specialised stroke rehabilitation remains limited.
