STEM scholarship inspires student to aim for excellence

curtin student lily edwards

Lily Edwards likes nothing more than solving a problem, so seemed destined to study Mechatronic Engineering at Curtin. Mechatronics, a heady mix of electrical, mechanical and software engineering, has spawned intelligent systems such as NASAโ€™s Curiosity Rover, i-Limbโ€™s bionic prosthesis and the immensely popular Roomba robot vacuum cleaner.

Last year, Lily built her first autonomous robot at Curtin and, at just 20 years of age, sheโ€™s bucking the national STEM trend. Females currently make up just 37 per cent of enrolments in university STEM courses and only 15 per cent of STEM-qualified jobs are held by women – numbers the Federal Government is focused on improving with its Advancing Women in STEM Strategy.

In 2023, Lily was awarded the Christine Foster Memorial Scholarship, which supports female students pursuing science and engineering courses at Curtin.

Established by Christineโ€™s former WASM classmates and friends, the scholarship honours Christineโ€™s life, which was cut tragically short while on a working holiday in the UK in June 2000.

Christine grew up in Kalgoorlie and attained a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) at the WA School of Mines Kalgoorlie campus 1993-1996. Following graduation, Christine pursued a career in mining, gaining early experience in Australian and New Zealand underground mines.

She was highly respected by her peers and was a motivated professional, improving standards and challenging barriers for females in her chosen career path.

Lily said it was humbling that Christineโ€™s peers had created this scholarship in her memory and vowed to do her proud.

โ€œChristine sounded like a great woman, and it was very unfortunate what happened to her,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œThere was so much more she could have achieved in her life but sadly never got the chance.โ€

Lily said the Christine Foster Scholarship gave her added financial assistance and encouraged her to aim even higher in her studies.

โ€œKnowing that someone read my profile and said, โ€˜she deserves the scholarshipโ€™ made me feel really good and has helped me challenge myself even more,โ€™โ€™ she said.

Lily said she was inspired to follow a career in STEM after discovering her passion for problem solving while at school.

โ€œOne of the reasons why I enjoy STEM subjects so much is that you get to see things work. You can see if something is right or wrong, and if itโ€™s wrong you can review your work and figure it out. Thereโ€™s always an answer,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œIโ€™m actually the first to study engineering in my family. Both my parents went to university, but my dad studied IT and my mum studied arts and teaching.

โ€œAt school in Geraldton I loved maths and science and was lucky because I had excellent teachers who encouraged and challenged me.

โ€œAt Curtin Iโ€™ve also been fortunate to have had some great lecturers. You can tell that they really care about your learning, they want you to succeed and are willing to provide any help you might need.

Lily said studying a course where just 9.9 per cent of her cohort are female had not been without its challenges but said if youโ€™re interested in studying a STEM course at Curtin, donโ€™t let the numbers stop you.

โ€œI think the main thing to remember is if you want to study STEM and itโ€™s what you want to do with your life, itโ€™s not really about the men to women ratio so donโ€™t let that discourage you,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œI canโ€™t imagine how few women Christine studied with back when she was studying. But Iโ€™m sure that it would have been very similar to nowadays though where the women in your class become some of your closest friends.

โ€œAlso, it might be a bit of a โ€˜boysโ€™ industry but 90 per cent of the time those boys will be some of the loveliest people youโ€™ll meet, and you will no doubt find great friends in them as well.โ€

When Lily graduates, she said she plans to use her mechatronics knowledge in the evolving field of robotics in healthcare.

โ€œI want to apply engineering to medicine, and Iโ€™m interested using robotics in the field of prosthetics. I want to help people. I grew up very privileged with a supportive family, great school and fantastic teachers and many people donโ€™t get that. Iโ€™d like to give something back.โ€

Lily is also passionate about continuing to break down gender barriers by empowering other young women to pursue studies and careers in STEM.

โ€œSTEM offers so many amazing opportunities to make a difference in the world. Iโ€™d love to encourage and mentor more young women to pursue their passion for it,โ€ she says.

โ€œIโ€™ve been lucky enough to be supported by a scholarship for women in STEM, and Iโ€™d like to support women who are aspiring to develop STEM careers in some way too.โ€

Meet Curtin Electrical and Electronics Engineering graduate Haniff Soorian Pagavalan who is pursuing his dream as an Electrical Engineer at Western Power. โšก๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

Haniff was involved in Curtinโ€™s Internship Gateway Program, which gives organisations the chance to foster connections with highly motivated science and engineering students.

Through the program, your organisation will not only contribute to shaping the development of our industry-ready graduates but will also provide your team with the opportunity to develop their mentoring and leadership skills.

For Haniff, undertaking the internship was an invaluable experience that prepared him for the workforce. ๐ŸŽ“

โ€œI spent about three months as an intern and for the first month, they sent me into the workshop. I got to see how the switchboards were constructed.

In that experience, Iโ€™d say the most valuable thing was seeing how the drawings translated into the real physical thing. Seeing it in real life makes a lot of a difference and I learned that Iโ€™m more capable than I think I am,โ€ Haniff said.

Eric Carwardine has a special connection with Curtin University that spans 35 glorious years, from 1964 to 1999. ๐ŸŽ“

Last month, the Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences alumnus and former Curtin staff member took a trip down memory lane with us, visiting his old stomping grounds at our Bentley Campus.

โ€œIn the summer of 1964, I was part of the pioneering movement from St George's Terrace Perth to the Bentley campus.

โ€œSomewhere in my archives, I have photographic negatives of the construction of Building 306 which housed the departments of Chemistry, Biology, and Medical Technology, and was set amongst a pine plantation. ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿงช

โ€œIn the basement of Building 306, there was a cafeteria and an ablutions block and several of us set up home in the ground floor chemistry laboratories, putting our sleeping bags under the fume hoods. With all the comforts of home, we could save traveling time as we set up the laboratories.โ€

Eric attended Perth Technical College before it became the Western Australian Institute of Technology in 1967, and later Curtin in 1985.

Eric now resides at SwanCare Tandara in East Victoria Park with his wife Heather and likes to keep active by creating beautiful jarrah furniture and writing his memoir.โœ ๐Ÿ““

โ€œAt the age of eighty years my quota of one billion heartbeats must be nearing exhaustion but before the counter reached zero, I had a task to perform, a pilgrimage to where my full-time employment started,โ€ he said.

โ€œWhen I retired in 1999, I was the longest-serving member of the technical staff. Thank you, Curtin, for the opportunity to stroll down memory lane.โ€ ๐Ÿ’›

Today is World Book Day! ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŒ

To celebrate this special day, our Senior Writer and Editor-in-Chief of Curtin Commons Carmelle Wilkinson shares the book that ignited her love of literature.

โ€œI remember reading The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe for the first time when I was 11 years old, and not being able to put it down. Itโ€™s a magical memory and one that can easily be summoned every time I attempt to clean my wardrobe.

If only there was a secret door behind my closest that opened to the wintery wonderland of Narniaโ€ฆand the piles of clothing and chores would disappear โ€“ even for just a moment.

Now, having read it to both my kids, I can honestly say itโ€™s still up there as one of my favourites.

An enchanted world where a lion can talk, an evil witch reigns, and magic and adventure lurk around every corner โ€“ whatโ€™s not to like?โ€œ

Thank you to Curtin alumnus Jesse Wagstaff from the Perth Wildcats and Australian Paralympic swimmer and former student Ben Popham for sharing their words of wisdom before the big game.
