Christine Foster

Born and bred in Kalgoorlie, Christine was destined to pursue a career in mining. She attained her engineering (mining) degree at the WA School of Mines Kalgoorlie campus and after graduating in 1996, gained early experience in Australian and New Zealand underground mines. A motivated professional who was well regarded by her peers, Christine actively improved standards and challenged barriers for women in mining. She tragically died in Edinburgh on June 29, 2000.

The Scholarship

Christine’s fellow WASM Alumni have established the Christine Foster Memorial Scholarship to honour her memory by supporting female students pursuing science and engineering courses at Curtin.

2023 Christine Foster Scholarship Recipient: Lily Edwards

Curtin Mechatronics Engineering student Lily Edwards is grateful to be the 2023 recipient of the Christine Foster Scholarship which has encouraged her to aim even higher in her studies and empower other young women to do pursue a STEM career.

I want to apply engineering to medicine, and I’m interested using robotics in the field of prosthetics. I want to help people. I grew up very privileged with a supportive family, great school and fantastic teachers and many people don’t get that. I’d like to give something back. STEM offers so many amazing opportunities to make a difference in the world. I’d love to encourage and mentor more young women to pursue their passion for it. I’ve been lucky enough to be supported by a scholarship for women in STEM, and I’d like to support women who are aspiring to develop STEM careers in some way too.
