Major overview
The Health Services major prepares you for a career improving how healthcare services are planned, managed and delivered. Rather than working in direct patient care, you’ll focus on strengthening healthcare systems and supporting healthier communities.
You’ll learn how health services are designed, managed and evaluated, with a strong focus on using data, digital tools and leadership to improve outcomes.
You will gain understanding of diverse health systems and factors affecting healthcare utilisation including Indigenous populations; develop ethical leadership, risk management, clinical governance, and quality improvement capabilities for equitable health outcomes; gain skills in fostering change leadership through innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital health tools for sustainable service improvements.
You will also have opportunity to enhance your communication, stakeholder engagement, business literacy, and resource management skills for effective health service delivery.

Major structure
In your first year, you’ll build a foundation in health sciences through core studies in professional health practice, epidemiology, biostatistics, Indigenous cultures and health and communication skills.
You’ll also choose from a range of optional units from related areas, helping you explore different interests and shape your future study direction.
In your second year, you’ll begin to specialise in psychology and health systems and health data. You’ll explore how healthcare is delivered in Australia, develop skills in analysing and communicating health data, and learn how health systems are planned, evaluated and improved.
You’ll be introduced to innovation, entrepreneurship, management and leadership concepts, and can gain real-world experience through optional industry placements.
In your final year, you’ll focus on advanced health services practice, including health services management, digital health, data governance and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence in healthcare. You’ll also examine broader system challenges such as climate change and health system sustainability.
Your studies culminate in a capstone project, where you’ll apply your knowledge to a real-world health services challenge and develop practical, innovative, and sustainable evidence-informed solutions.
