Major overview
This is one of 14 majors in the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours).
Mathematics is often described as the language of the universe. Lots of the technology we use today began as ‘pure’ mathematical ideas, explored long before their practical value was understood.
In this major, you’ll discover how abstract thinking and mathematical theory can be applied in practice. You’ll develop expertise in mathematics, statistics, analytics and programming – and, through applied learning, projects and workshops, you’ll strengthen your capabilities in critical reasoning, problem-solving, communication and entrepreneurship.
The Bachelor of Advanced Science is an honours degree designed for high-achieving students. It gives you opportunities to extend your knowledge through applied, project-based learning and skill development workshops. Through immersive, year-long project units, you may work with a Curtin research group or develop an industry-relevant project.
After graduating, you could apply your skills to analyse data, predict trends, improve systems and help organisations make better decisions. You may also continue into postgraduate study or research and contribute to mathematical discoveries.

What you’ll learn
In your first year, you’ll strengthen your foundations in mathematics, statistics and programming. You’ll study core units alongside students from other Advanced Science majors while building skills in:
- calculus and mathematical reasoning
- probability, statistics and data analysis
- linear algebra and modelling real-world systems
- programming for complex problem solving.
In your second and third years, you’ll increase your analytical and computational expertise, studying advanced topics like:
- high-level methods to solve mathematical problems
- statistical modelling, regression and data-driven decision-making
- advanced mathematical theory, including complex analysis.
You can specialise in areas that match your interests – such as data science, artificial intelligence or finance. You’ll also tailor your learning through a choice of projects and elective units.
In your final year, you’ll complete an honours project or research dissertation.
