What happens when light, chemistry, plant matter, time, and touch become tools for scientific inquiry under conditions of constraint?
Light as Voice brings together works created through Science Meets Art: Cameraless Photovoice, a science-led educational approach developed at Curtin University and delivered across custodial learning sites in partnership with the Western Australian Department of Justice. Working with camera-free photographic processes including cyanotypes, lumens, cyanolumens, phytograms, chemigrams, bleaching, and toning, students engaged scientific inquiry through creative, material-led experimentation.
The works in this exhibition emerged through observation, testing, variation, and iteration. They are not simply visual outcomes, but traces of learning in action. For scientists, artists, educators, and anyone interested in access and transformative curriculum, Light as Voice demonstrates how scientific inquiry can be meaningfully engaged though creative, material-led methods, and how education in custody can operate as inventive, rigorous practice.
