From July 4 – September 14 the walls of the John Curtin Gallery will be lined with James Tylor’s Turrangka…in the shadows as well as Nan Goldin: The ballad of sexual dependency.

Each of these influential artists uncovers the influences of their lives, opening a window into the past and providing insight into culturally significant lived experiences.

Turrangka…in the shadows

Turrangka…in the shadows surveys a decade of work by artist James Tylor, examining the suppression and erasure of Aboriginal cultural history from the Australian landscape through the ongoing legacy of colonialism. It brings together a comprehensive selection of his unique daguerreotypes, expansive digital photographic series, and hand-made Kaurna cultural objects.

At the core of Tylor’s practice is a continuously innovative programme of photographic intervention, disrupting the image to redact or highlight visual information. Turrangka…in the shadows looks at the complex interplay of techniques and the incisive observations on Australia’s fraught history that characterise Tylor’s prolific and profound artistic practice.

The ballad of sexual dependency

Nan Goldin’s, The ballad of sexual dependency is one of the defining artworks of the twentieth century. Recently acquired by the National Gallery of Australia from the artist’s personal collection, this ground-breaking series of 126 brilliant colour photographs is touring exclusively in WA to the John Curtin Gallery.

Decades-long in the making, the series follows in intimate detail the lives of Goldin’s community – the post-punk, creative, queer scene that gathered around her after she moved from Boston to the Bowery district of New York in the late 1970s. As well as detailing highly personal narratives and connections, the ballad carries tremendous emotional power that continues to influence contemporary photographers and artists today.
