{"id":145721,"date":"2022-06-01T09:26:02","date_gmt":"2022-06-01T01:26:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/study\/?post_type=pd&#038;p=145721"},"modified":"2024-02-29T15:38:33","modified_gmt":"2024-02-29T07:38:33","slug":"economic-and-social-data-analysis","status":"publish","type":"pd","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/study\/prof-development\/economic-and-social-data-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Economic and social data analysis using R"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This new two-day masterclass run by the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre will provide course attendees with a practical introduction to the most common empirical approaches in business, economic and social data analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course is designed to equip attendees with statistical modelling skills that support data-driven business decisions and evidence-based policy making, with a major focus on intuition and practical application of the main statistical techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course is structured around a combination of accessible lecture-based instruction and practical computer exercises using real world datasets to illustrate techniques and approaches that support a better understanding of economic and social outcomes, for example: What are the key determinants of wages and hours decisions. What contributes most to the likelihood of experiencing of poverty? What factors drive business revenues or profits?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instruction is delivered in a way that conveys an intuitive understanding of data analytical methods, with an emphasis on the interpretation and communication of results and provides a series of tips and tricks for effective descriptive and statistical analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants will be provided with an introduction to the use of the open-source R statistical programming language and the R-Studio interface to illustrate the modelling methods covered in the masterclass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some experience in statistical data analysis is preferred but the course is practical in nature and will not dwell too heavily on theory or algebra.<\/p>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Learning-outcomes\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Learning-outcomes\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Learning-outcomes\">Learning outcomes<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Learning-outcomes\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The course will cover:<br \/>\n\u2022 the use (and power) of descriptive statistics<br \/>\n\u2022 graphical methods for economic and social data analysis<br \/>\n\u2022 the application of linear regression<br \/>\n\u2022 practical model specification<br \/>\n\u2022 interpretation and communication of regression results<br \/>\n\u2022 choosing the most appropriate statistical approach for specific business problems, or economic or social issues.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop will also touch briefly on some generalisations to the basic linear regression model.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Who-is-the-program-for?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Who-is-the-program-for?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Who-is-the-program-for?\">Who is the program for?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Who-is-the-program-for?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The target audience includes public policy professionals, analysts from the private and community sectors, academics and social scientists, early career researchers, as well as Honours and postgraduate research students.
