Students are expected to engage in ethical behaviour in all learning environments.<\/li>\n<li>Compliance with the codes, guidelines, and policies facilitates safe, competent interactions and relationships for students and\/or others with whom they engage. Dietitians Australia\u2019s Code of Conduct sets expectations for the professional behaviour of dietitians practising in Australia. The Scope of Practice for dietitians assumes dietitians will take responsibility for their competence ant to act with integrity and honesty, and within the limits of their qualification and expertise. The Dietitians Australia Accreditation Standards for Dietetic Education Programs states that to meet the minimum standards for program accreditation, university programs must ensure graduate dietitians demonstrated competence as described in the National Competency Standards (NCS).<\/li>\n<li>Examples:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Maintaining an academic record with no breaches of the Student Charter<\/li>\n<li>Compliance with the academic and non-academic codes of conduct, professional competency standards, fieldwork and organisational policies and government legislation (e.g. the Privacy Act) including those relating to:\n<ul>\n<li>Academic integrity<\/li>\n<li>Informed consent<\/li>\n<li>Privacy and confidentiality<\/li>\n<li>Behaviour that respects personal and professional boundaries<\/li>\n<li>Behaviour that achieves dietetic service quality and national competency standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Working co-operatively, respectfully and in an effective professional manner with peers from diverse backgrounds, in diverse academic and clinical settings (classrooms, laboratories and workplace settings).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Legal-compliance\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Legal-compliance\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Legal-compliance\">Legal compliance<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Legal-compliance\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <ol>\n<li>Dietetic practice is guided by legislation to enable safe delivery of care. Dietitians abide by relevant laws, and respect and adhere to their professional obligations, including obligations under any Dietitians Australia professional standards, the Accredited Practicing Dietitian Program, the National Code of Conduct for Health Care Workers, and the National Law. Dietitians Australia is a member of the National Alliance of Self-Regulating Health Professions (NASRHP). Student demonstrates knowledge and compliance with relevant laws and professional regulations.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge, understanding and compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements are necessary pre-requisites to placements to reduce the risk of harm to self and others. Compliance with these regulations and the law ensures that students are both responsible and accountable for their practice.<\/li>\n<li>Examples:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Comply with relevant poisons legislation, authorisation, local policy and own scope of practice, including to use, administer, obtain, possess, prescribe, sell, supply and store therapeutic products safely.<\/li>\n<li>Compliance with child protection and safety, work health and safety, and anti-discrimination legislation and policies.<\/li>\n<li>Adhere to immunisation and health screening requirements for the course.<\/li>\n<li>Comply with relevant field trip requirements as appropriate (e.g. National Police Checks, Working With Children Checks).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Behavioural-stability\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Behavioural-stability\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Behavioural-stability\">Behavioural stability<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Behavioural-stability\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <ol>\n<li>Behavioural stability is required to function and adapt effectively and sensitively as a dietitian.<br \/>\nStudent dietitians need to demonstrate behavioural stability to work constructively in a diverse and changing academic and professional environments, which may at times be challenging and unpredictable.<\/li>\n<li>Students must be able to develop and demonstrate:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>The ability to hear and respond to others\u2019 emotions associated with food and eating<\/li>\n<li>Work individually and in teams in diverse and changing environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Examples:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Managing own emotional state to be able to develop and maintain an appropriate relationship with a diverse range of clients, professional colleagues, supervisors, academic staff, and peers.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate the ability to be aware of, and manage, own responses to hearing or viewing patient or client communications.<\/li>\n<li>Responding sensitively to others\u2019 distressing communications and emotions.<\/li>\n<li>Engaging in placement experiences, while maintaining awareness of, and selectively sharing, own reactions.<\/li>\n<li>Managing own physical and mental health effectively, ensuring appropriate others are aware of conditions that may fluctuate and impact performance.<\/li>\n<li>Being receptive and responding appropriately to constructive feedback.<\/li>\n<li>Manage multiple tasks and complex demands with composure and focus. This includes being able to effectively manage workloads by prioritising competing demands.<\/li>\n<li>Being able to work effectively in the face of uncertainty and adapt to changing environments.<\/li>\n<li>Working with people across the lifespan and from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Communication\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Communication\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Communication\">Communication<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Communication\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p><strong>Verbal communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li>Effective verbal communication, in English, is an essential requirement to provide safe and effective delivery of dietetic practice to clients, as well as university and clinical supervisors for effective learning and safe and effective practice.<\/li>\n<li>Throughout the course, student dietitians need to develop and demonstrate proficiency in verbal English to allow for precise and comprehensive two-way discussions at conversational speed, at audible speaking volume and with appropriate tone of voice to peers, academics, patients, clients, communities and members of healthcare and professional teams.\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Respectful communication with people of different gender identities, sexuality, age, and diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.<\/li>\n<li>Active participation in group discussions in tutorials, simulations and other learning activities.<\/li>\n<li>Accurate, appropriate, and timely responses in verbal communication,<\/li>\n<li>Clear instructions in the context of the situation, and<\/li>\n<li>Timely and clear feedback and reports<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Examples\n<ul>\n<li>Speaking at conversational speed in noisy environments such as hospital wards and classrooms.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking and make oneself understood via telehealth systems including online apps and telephones.<\/li>\n<li>Responding appropriately to a client\u2019s questions<\/li>\n<li>Building conversational rapport with a client to encourage trust and cooperation in therapy sessions.<\/li>\n<li>Effectively communicating and confirming instructions in a range of different environments.<\/li>\n<li>Presenting information to multidisciplinary team members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Non-verbal communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Effective non-verbal communication is demonstrated by recognising, interpreting and responding to non-verbal cues. Effective non-verbal communication is essential for demonstrating empathy and gaining trust and respect in dietetic practice.<\/li>\n<li>The ability to observe, understand and respond appropriately to non-verbal cues assists:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Building rapport and gaining trust and respect in academic and professional relationships<\/li>\n<li>Consistent and appropriate facial expressions and eye contact, being mindful of space and time boundaries<\/li>\n<li>Sensitivity to individual and\/or cultural differences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Examples:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Recognising and responding to client facial expressions and emotional states when they experience pain or distress, showing empathy.<\/li>\n<li>Communicating effectively with people in distress.<\/li>\n<li>Communicating respectfully with people of different gender, sexuality, age groups, and from diverse cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds.<\/li>\n<li>Using appropriate eye contact, gestures, facial expression, and an open body language to build rapport and demonstrate understanding and empathy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Written communication<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Effective written English communication required to produce a cohesive academic and clinical argument and demonstrate academic writing conventions, including paraphrasing.<\/li>\n<li>Students need to develop and demonstrate written communication for:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Construction of coherent written communication appropriate to the circumstances and level for the audience,<\/li>\n<li>Construction of text reflective of the required academic standards,<\/li>\n<li>Ability to convey knowledge and understanding of relevant subject matter for professional practice,<\/li>\n<li>Ability to read and comprehend information presented in a variety of standard formats,<\/li>\n<li>Accurate written communication, including record-keeping and client notes (vital to provide consistent and safe client care).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Examples\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Timely, accurate, concise, clear, legally compliant, hand-written and electronic client records and scientific articles.<\/li>\n<li>Written records of an              <ol>\n<li>An appropriate level of knowledge and cognitive skills must be used by student dietitians within the Master of Dietetics course to provide safe and competent dietetic practice.<\/li>\n<li>Students need to develop and demonstrate:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Acquisition, recall and application of knowledge, with attention to detail<\/li>\n<li>Integration and implementation of theory and knowledge from various sources in clinical practice<\/li>\n<li>Engagement in scientific, rational, ethical, and clinical reasoning,<\/li>\n<li>Prioritisation of options by assessing and comparing their respective merits,<\/li>\n<li>Problem solving of intellectual and physical challenges, both independently and in groups,<\/li>\n<li>The ability to gather, comprehend and organise medical and other client information, in a limited timeframe<\/li>\n<li>Accurate recall of client information without reference to notes under time pressures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Examples\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Gather, comprehend, and organise information such as working out what information is relevant from client notes and stakeholder meetings.<\/li>\n<li>Integrate theory and knowledge from various sources, such as considering evidence, practical constraints and a client\u2019s unique circumstances and needs when designing nutrition care programs.<\/li>\n<li>Develop options and assess and compare their respective merits such as working out the most appropriate medical nutrition therapy to recommend for a client.<\/li>\n<li>Accurately recall information without reference such as being able to think on your feet, and answer questions from patients, clients, carers and community groups.<\/li>\n<li>Accurately undertake arithmetic calculations to accurately recommend feeding regimes.<\/li>\n<li>Complete dietetic tasks in a safe and reasonable time such as performing tasks when they need to be done, such as a new patient referral or advanced care or discharge planning.<\/li>\n<li>Engage appropriately with colleagues and team members from other disciplines (recognise and understand various scopes of practice and roles across practice contexts)<\/li>\n<li>Maintain sufficient level of concentration to focus on a task to completion such as completing a comprehensive to establishing and maintaining strong relationships with people.<\/li>\n<li>Students are to develop and demonstrate:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Use of highly developed relational skills for effective engagement, assessment, intervention and evaluation of nutrition care processes.<\/li>\n<li>Delivery of nutrition care processes in collaboration with patients, clients, other professionals, key stakeholders and partners.<\/li>\n<li>Engaging in effective and empathic dietetic practice and group work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Examples\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>The ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients, academic staff, supervisors and peers.<\/li>\n<li>Understand another person\u2019s perspective such being empathetic to clients in a difficult personal situation, or when their values are different to your own.<\/li>\n<li>The ability to engage and relate appropriately in individual and group dietetic services.<\/li>\n<li>Rapidly building rapport with a patient, client or group to engage them in the medical nutrition or nutrition education session while on placement.<\/li>\n<li>Effectively using relational and interpersonal skills to manage the relationship with patients, clients or groups on placement.<\/li>\n<li>Relating effectively, openly and sensitively to academic staff, supervisors and one\u2019s own issues, actions, values and behaviours.<\/li>\n<li>Dietetic practice therefore needs to demonstrate the ability to accurately reflect on academic and professional performance, the awareness of own thinking and the ability to evaluate and adapt to challenges in learning and clinical work environments. Dietetic training requires well developed understanding of oneself in order to appropriately engage with placement supervision and feedback on dietetic work.<\/li>\n<li>Examples\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Working with clients while on placement and understanding and responding to them requires the ability to notice, understand and effectively manage one\u2019s own reactions to situations that may arise.<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining professional empathy and objectivity in the context of a dying patient but being able to express your emotions privately to colleagues.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrating competent performance when randomly allocated a client during a viva or practical examination.<\/li>\n<li>Managing uncertainties in scientific and professional decision making.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrating resilience and adaptability when a clinical situation suddenly changes<\/li>\n<li>Understanding that, even when learning, your focus as a student dietitian must be on the care and safety of your client.<\/li>\n<li>Being aware of, and taking responsibility for, own role in inter-personal and team interactions.<\/li>\n<li>Recognising when one\u2019s own thinking differs from another person\u2019s perspective and responding respectfully.<\/li>\n<li>Reflecting in supervision on how one\u2019s own responses may impede or enhance work with particular complex practice tasks safety, effectively in time-constrained environments at a consistent and sustained level to meet individual and group needs.<\/li>\n<li>Student dietitians will need to develop and demonstrate:\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Sufficient, efficient energy and mental endurance is an essential requirement for delivering the nutrition care process which requires concentration on the activity during an assigned period to provide effective dietetic care.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to perform repetitive activities with a level of concentration until completion of the task.<\/li>\n<li>Capacity to maintain consistency and quality of performance throughout the designated period of time.<\/li>\n<li>Sufficient physical and mental endurance is required to perform multiple tasks in an assigned period to provide safe and effective care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Examples\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>Consistent involvement in placement practice over a negotiated time including full time placement.<\/li>\n<li>Performance of repetitive tasks (e.g. typing notes or ward rounds) for periods of 2-4 hours, with appropriate breaks.<\/li>\n<li>Wearing a clinical uniform and closed-in shoes in required classes, on clinical placement and in practical examinations.<\/li>\n<li>Restriction of wearing jewellery to ensure hygiene requirements are meet.<\/li>\n<li>Maintenance of a level of concentration to focus on an activity to completion<\/li>\n<li>Maintenance of specific required immunisation through the course.<\/li>\n<li>Adequate protection of self and others to prevent the spread of infectious diseases<\/li>\n<li>Study practices and workplace performance to ensure effective learning and application
