Developed in partnership with industry, this accredited, award-winning Engineering Foundation Year and its purpose-built First Year Studios promote the concept of learning by doing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will study the fundamental concepts and develop the required skills common to all areas of engineering. This program is a peer support program set up to provide you with help on some of your first-year units. All Study Buddy facilitators have excelled in the unit previously.<\/p>\n<p>You can find the STEM Study Buddies timetable and session locations on the Science Students Blackboard Organisation or the Engineering Foundation Year (EFY) Blackboard Organisation. The design studio and project rooms reflect the layout of a modern office, familiarising students with the style of a professional working environment. It gives first year students a secure base from which to develop their social and academic contacts, allowing a better adjustment from secondary school to the larger learning environment of university. The studio common space and project rooms provide an amenity conducive to class team project work and peer tuition.<\/p>\n<p>Students work within an environment that is a microcosm of real engineering professional practice, the studio acting as the hub of their social and academic networks.<\/p>\n<p>The EFY Studio facilities include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an open plan design office<\/li>\n<li>project meeting rooms<\/li>\n<li>learning assistance clinics<\/li>\n<li>Computing, Electrical and Mechanics laboratories<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Engineering Foundation Year Studio has proven to be highly effective both as a platform for the EFY curriculum, and as a vehicle for students\u2019 networking, socialisation and development of a group into a vibrant community. After a brief introduction Student Engineers will participate in two Field Work activities \u2013 An Orient Hunt and Conceive Design Implement Operate (CDIO) Activity.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the Orient Hunt is to allow new students to familiarize themselves with the campus, providing some important information about studying at university, and to start their transition to becoming a professional engineer. The items on the Orient Hunt will provide new students with some essential information about life on campus, facilities and other key information. There will also be the opportunity to talk to current engineering students about university life.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the CDIO Activity is to provide new students with important information about engineering and Engineering Foundation Year by engaging in the engineering design process with imposed constraints. New students will be able to network with professional engineers, Engineers Australia and staff about university and engineering. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, make friends and begin the Curtin Engineering Foundation Year journey.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n        \n<\/mimas-block>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"collaboration\">Collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtin Engineering is proud of its close industry collaboration and appreciates widespread industry support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The engineering community has assisted the Engineering Foundation Year (EFY) through various industry advisory panels, financial sponsorship of the EFY studio project rooms and direct input through participation in lectures and student site visits. The industry exposure obtained during the EFY delivers students with a positive, considered and realistic view of the engineering profession at an early stage of their education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recognition by industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The EFY program was successfully accredited as part of all engineering disciplines by the professional body Engineers Australia in 2005, receiving a number of special commendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective engineering education requires an inclusive partnership between Curtin University and industry. A shared ownership and appreciation of the academic needs of future engineering graduates from their foundation year onwards ensures industry and society are equipped with professionally accomplished, culturally astute graduates. These graduates will display a solid theoretical grounding and a strong practical focus equal to society and industry demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe first-year Learning Studio facility and the very effective Learning Clinics as an innovative and effective learning environment for commencing students and the strength of the industry sponsorship in establishing this project\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><em>Engineers Australia (2006)<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">EFY also won Curtin\u2019s \u201cExcellence and Innovation in Teaching\u201d award in the category of \u201cFirst-year Experience\u201d in 2006.
