{"id":764,"date":"2022-05-05T09:29:25","date_gmt":"2022-05-05T01:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/?page_id=764"},"modified":"2026-02-18T09:54:33","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T01:54:33","slug":"semester-year-exchange","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/experience\/global\/semester-year-exchange\/","title":{"rendered":"Semester and year-long exchange programs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2022\/01\/GirlsinPrague_1500-aspect-ratio-2-1.jpg.optimal.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Going on a semester or year-long exchange is a great way to experience other cultures and add a unique edge to your Curtin degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With over 150 international partner institutions and campuses in 30 countries, there\u2019s a destination for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/people-to-people\/new-colombo-plan\/mobility-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Colombo Plan<\/a>&nbsp;(NCP) funding from the Australian Government is avaliable to support Australian students studying in the Indo-Pacific region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When selecting a destination and host partner, remember that you need to obtain credit for your study, so sometimes the course you are studying may direct you to your destination.&nbsp;You&#8217;ll remain enrolled at Curtin for the duration of your exchange studies and you&#8217;ll also be enrolled in the host university overseas. You will pay tuition to Curtin and do not pay fees to the host university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staying open-minded and adventurous is the key!<\/p>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n<div class=\"block-heading\"\n     data-segment=\"dom\"\n     data-style=\"\"\n     data-align=\"default\"\n>\n\n                                <h2 class=\"block-heading__title \" id=\"check-your-eligibility\">Check your eligibility<\/h2>\n            \n                        \n                        \n            \n                <\/div>\n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Eligibility-criteria-\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Eligibility-criteria-\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Eligibility-criteria-\">Eligibility criteria <\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Eligibility-criteria-\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>To apply for a semester or year-long exchange program you must be able to meet the following requirements upon assessment of your application:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be admitted in an undergraduate coursework degree or be admitted into a postgraduate degree that has a minimum 300 credits at a Curtin campus (you can apply while on an approved Leave of Absence, but must be enrolled prior to departure)<\/li>\n<li>Have a course weighted average (CWA) of 60 or above in your current course of study (some partner universities may require a higher CWA)<\/li>\n<li>Have an academic status of &#8216;Good Standing&#8217; with no academic misconduct, prior to departure be able to maintain full-time enrolment and attendance at the partner university<\/li>\n<li>Have completed an approved Study Plan Proposal form<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To go on semester exchange,\u00a0<strong>undergraduate<\/strong>\u00a0students must be at least in their first semester of the second year of their course.\u00a0<strong>Postgraduate<\/strong>\u00a0students must be in at least the second semester of their course, but this can be reviewed if you have completed a Curtin undergraduate degree. This can also be negotiated if you wish to study at another Curtin Campus.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t meet the eligibility requirements, you may have your application assessed on a case-by-case basis, based on circumstance and merit. Additional documentation, including an Academic Reference may be requested to support your application.<\/p>\n<p>The following students are\u00a0<em><strong>not eligible<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0to apply for the semester<br \/>\nexchange program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Australia Award Students (AAS)<\/li>\n<li>Students admitted in non-degree programs<\/li>\n<li>Students admitted in a Curtin graduate certificate, graduate diploma or postgraduate course of 200 credits or less (unless applying to study at another Curtin campus)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sponsored students must seek approval from Go Global prior to applying for exchange.<\/p>\n<p>If you are OUA student, please confirm your eligibility with Go Global directly.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n        \n<\/mimas-block>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Follow these steps to apply for student or cross campus exchange<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Step-1---Attend-a-Go-Global-information-session\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Step-1---Attend-a-Go-Global-information-session\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Step-1---Attend-a-Go-Global-information-session\">Step 1 &#8211; Attend a Go Global information session<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Step-1---Attend-a-Go-Global-information-session\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>These sessions are the best way to learn about the opportunities available and the program that is the best fit for you. Don&#8217;t forget to keep our application deadline dates in mind when putting your application together!<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.1 Prepare your Study Plan Proposal Form<\/strong><br \/>\nOne of the best parts of going on exchange is that your studies count towards your Curtin degree!<\/p>\n<p>To ensure you will receive credit, you need to complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/02\/CurtinGoGlobalStudyPlanProposal_040226.pdf\">study plan proposal form [.pdf 2MB]<\/a> and have your course coordinator check and approve your units to confirm the credit value and that you will receive credit.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>TIP:<\/strong> Unsure who to contact to approve your study plan? Contact <\/em><em>your school student services to find out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.2 Does your course include elective units?<\/strong><br \/>\nWe recommend that you use these when going on exchange as this will provide you with greater flexibility and more options as to where you can go on exchange.<\/p>\n<p>You are required to have four preferred units approved and two alternative units approved prior to submitting your application. When it comes time to enrol into your units at the host university, your preferred units may be unavailable due to class limits, timetable clashes, or other circumstances. If this occurs you will need to reselect units from your alternative approved units.<\/p>\n<p>Unless otherwise advised, you only need to complete a study plan proposal for your first host university preference.<\/p>\n<p>You will be required to take a full-time study load while on exchange (i.e. Curtin enrolment of 75 to 100 credits) as well as meeting the minimum enrolment requirements of the host university.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.3 How to choose your units and have them approved <\/strong><strong>for a partner university<\/strong><br \/>\nVisit the partner websites and identify which courses they offer. You will need to identify units (courses or modules) that contain similar content to your Curtin unit and submit this to your Course Coordinator for approval and obtain their signature on your Study Plan Proposal Form.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.4 Study at another Curtin campus<\/strong><br \/>\nAs the units offered at Curtin campuses are delivered in English and have the same content as Curtin Perth units, preparing your Study Plan Proposal Form will be quick and easy. You will remain enrolled as a Curtin Perth student and pay your tuition to Curtin Perth.<\/p>\n<p>You will need to check the Curtin Handbook to establish which of your required units are available at the Curtin campuses and then submit your Study Plan Proposal Form to your course coordinator for approval and their signature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.5 Submit your Go Global Online Application<\/strong><br \/>\nComplete your Go Global Exchange Application Form online. Once you submit your application, please email your Study Plan Proposal Form and scanned copy of your valid passport to <a href=\"mailto:goglobal@curtin.edu.au\">goglobal@curtin.edu.au<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Your application will be assessed and you will be advised via your Curtin student email on the outcome of your application to participate in the Curtin Exchange Program. We will always seek a place for you at your first preference, but this may not always be possible.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Step-4---Apply-to-your-host-university\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Step-4---Apply-to-your-host-university\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Step-4---Apply-to-your-host-university\">Step 4 &#8211; Apply to your host university<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Step-4---Apply-to-your-host-university\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Once a nomination has been accepted by the host university you will be instructed to complete the host university application form and supporting documents. This is not an acceptance into their exchange program, you are simply being invited to complete an application. The official acceptance may take some time to arrive after your application submission, so please be patient.<\/p>\n<p>The application process for each university will be different, so read all the information provided by the host university carefully and follow the instructions provided by the host university and\/or your Go Global coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re applying for student exchange to another Curtin campus, the Go Global team will provide you with the required documents you need to submit to finalise your enrolment.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Step-5---Get-ready-to-go\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Step-5---Get-ready-to-go\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Step-5---Get-ready-to-go\">Step 5 &#8211; Get ready to go<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Step-5---Get-ready-to-go\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Once you have been formally accepted by the host university, you can plan your adventure. This is when you&#8217;ll need to start organising your accommodation and travel. The host university will generally provide you with details about the required visas, accommodation and arrival dates.<\/p>\n<p>At this stage, you will also be put in contact with a student exchange advisor at the host university who will be able to assist you with specific questions about your exchange at their university. In the UK and Europe, a unit is called a module.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each university will have different semester dates, with the academic year in most other countries commencing in August or September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the US, Canada and Asia, many partner universities will refer to their credits as credit hours. A full time load may be 12 to 16 credit hours, however this does vary between universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the UK and Europe, many partner universities will refer to their credits as ECTS.
