These points are known as milestones. The defined milestones are: Milestone 1, Milestone 2 and Milestone 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to formally apply to your school to have your progress reviewed for each milestone. For each milestone there is an application form which you will need to complete and submit to your supervisor along with the required supporting documentation to commence the milestone review process within your school. The Graduate Research School will notify you once your Milestone 1 application has been approved by your Faculty Graduate Studies Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<mimas-block block-name=\"notification\" class=\"\"\n             data-segment=\"all\" data-variant=\"notice\" aria-label=\"notice\">\n    <span class=\"ico ico-info\" style=\"--icon:url(https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/wp-content\/themes\/mimas\/src\/img\/icons\/ico-info.svg)\" aria-hidden='true'>\n                                <\/span>\n    <section><p>Data collection (e.g. surveys, questionnaires or interviews, etc.) must not be conducted by provisional candidates.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/mimas-block>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-What-are-the-conditions-for-Milestone-1?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"What-are-the-conditions-for-Milestone-1?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-What-are-the-conditions-for-Milestone-1?\">What are the conditions for Milestone 1?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"What-are-the-conditions-for-Milestone-1?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The following conditions are considered by your Director of Graduate Research for your school in reviewing you Milestone 1 application:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Definition of an acceptable research program, including its objectives, methodology, facilities, resources and a time schedule for completion.<\/li>\n<li>Attainment of the necessary level of knowledge and skills to proceed with the proposed research program.<\/li>\n<li>Acceptance of the nominated Thesis Committee.<\/li>\n<li>Completion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/rig.curtin.edu.au\/home\">Research Initiation Guide<\/a> (RIG) to identify hazards and approvals required for planned research program, and successful upload of feedback form.<\/li>\n<li>Certification that adequate facilities and resources are available for the proposed research program.<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate identification of ethical issues for research involving animals; humans; ionising radiation; microwaves, lasers or ultraviolet light; or recombining of DNA.<\/li>\n<li>Completion of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.library.curtin.edu.au\/c.php?g=202401&amp;p=1333108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Management Plan<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Completion of any required coursework.<\/li>\n<li>Successful completion of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/higher-degree-by-research\/hdr-forms\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Research Integrity Training program<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-When-is-Milestone-1-due?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"When-is-Milestone-1-due?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-When-is-Milestone-1-due?\">When is Milestone 1 due?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"When-is-Milestone-1-due?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>An application for Milestone 1 is required to be\u00a0<strong>approved<\/strong>\u00a0by the Director of Graduate Research for your school within the following time frames:<\/p>\n<h3>Doctoral<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Full-time candidates\u00a0&#8211; 6 months from enrolment in the thesis component.<\/li>\n<li>Part-time candidates &#8211; 12 months from enrolment in the thesis component.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Masters by research (Master of Philosophy)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Full-time candidates &#8211; 3 months from enrolment in the thesis component.<\/li>\n<li>Part-time candidates &#8211; 6 months from enrolment in the thesis component.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your Milestone 1 application must be assessed and approved by\u00a0your School prior to being sent to the Director of Graduate Research for your school for assessment. We advise you to submit\u00a0your\u00a0application and all required documents to\u00a0your School for assessment well in advance of the due date.<\/p>\n<p>Where coursework is required, candidates are normally expected to complete the coursework component before submitting the Milestone 1 paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>If you fail to have your Milestone 1 application approved within the\u00a0specified\u00a0time frames, it will result in\u00a0your academic status being\u00a0amended\u00a0to\u00a0<em>Conditional<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0enrolment conditions are still not met within the designated time frame, the Director of Graduate Research for your school may recommend to the University Graduate Studies Committee that\u00a0your enrolment be terminated.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-What-is-required-for-my-Milestone-1-application?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"What-is-required-for-my-Milestone-1-application?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-What-is-required-for-my-Milestone-1-application?\">What is required for my Milestone 1 application?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"What-is-required-for-my-Milestone-1-application?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>For Milestone 1 you will need to submit to your supervisor:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/higher-degree-by-research\/hdr-forms\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Milestone 1 Application Form<\/a>\u00a0with the relevant sections completed.<\/li>\n<li>Research proposal, prepared as per the requirements set out in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/higher-degree-by-research\/hdr-forms\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Research Proposal Information Sheet<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Turnitin originality report for your research proposal.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/rig.curtin.edu.au\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research Initiation Guide<\/a>\u00a0(RIG) feedback form.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/higher-degree-by-research\/hdr-forms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research Integrity Training<\/a> (RIT) screenshot to confirm you have achieved a grade of at least 80%.<\/li>\n<li>Evidence that you have completed your <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.library.curtin.edu.au\/c.php?g=202401&amp;p=1333108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Management Plan<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Any relevant evidence that you have completed any required coursework.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For Milestone 1 you will also need to prepare and present an oral presentation on your research proposal to your School. Depending on the conventions in your discipline\/ School, the feedback on your written proposal and oral presentation might be combined. When you have received your feedback you should work with your supervisory team to address the comments and finalise your application. Directors of Graduate Research will usually require students to submit a document setting out how they have responded to reviewer comments at the time that they submit their finalised application.<\/p>\n<p>Once the review process has been completed in the School based on the material submitted, the Director of Graduate Research for your school will determine if you application for Milestone 1 is accepted or rejected.<\/p>\n<p>The Graduate Research School will inform you of the decision.<\/p>\n<p>If your application for a milestone is rejected, your\u00a0academic status will be classified as conditional. To access, Login to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oasis.curtin.edu.au\/Auth\/LogOn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student OASIS<\/a>. Click on the link to Blackboard, go to the &#8216;My Units&#8217; or &#8216;My Organisation&#8217; section, and select the &#8216;Research Integrity &#8211; HDR&#8217; training. From the left hand menu, select the heading &#8216;Originality Checking&#8217;. Full instructions are located in the ensuing screens.<\/p>\n<h3>Ethics and Safety Committee Approval<\/h3>\n<p>It is essential that you examine the ethics and safety guidelines related to your field of study to determine whether it&#8217;s necessary to seek approval from any University Ethics and\/or Safety Committees. Further information and a help guide can be found on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.library.curtin.edu.au\/c.php?g=202410&amp;p=6157895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Library&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Data Management Plan<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">You will need to create a plan for the management of the data you collect as part of your research, including data collection and storage. For further information see the Library&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.library.curtin.edu.au\/c.php?g=202401&amp;p=1333108\" rel=\"noopener\">Research Data Management<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>web page. The University provides the\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dmp.curtin.edu.au\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Research Data Management Planning Tool<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>to assist you in creating your plan and accessing the University&#8217;s data storage facilities.<\/p>\n<h3>Data Storage<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wa.gov.au\/government\/document-collections\/retention-and-disposal-of-state-records#sector-disposal-authorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Australian University Sector Disposal Authority (WAUSDA)<\/a>\u00a0 requires all data you have collected in your research to be retained for a minimum of seven years after the completion of the research or seven years after it is published, whichever is later.
