Exercise rehabilitation

Are you exercising correctly? If you suffer from an underlying medical condition or injury or have been diagnosed with a chronic illness, getting expert advice is important.

Is exercise physiology for me?

Exercise physiology focuses on the prevention and management of chronic diseases and injuries. It is facilitated by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP), allied health professionals specialising in clinical exercise prescription and the delivery of lifestyle modification programs for people who are at risk of, or living with chronic disease.

The aims of AEP clinical exercise programs are to prevent or manage chronic disease or injury, and assist in restoring your optimal physical function, health or wellness. AEPs also provide training in safe manual handling; perform functional assessments; carry out fitness tests; perform body composition tests and musculoskeletal assessments; and provide lifestyle education to help people manage their health conditions.

AEP’s provide support for people with a range of conditions including:

  • Obesity
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis and arthritis
  • Mental health conditions
  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain and fatigue
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Neuromuscular exercise therapy
  • Pulmonary disease

What to expect when you visit an AEP

Typical accredited exercise physiologist services include:

  • Initial assessment to determine health status, and exercise/physical activity history
  • Explain how exercise therapy will help to treat or improve your condition and improve your quality of life
  • Discussing your exercise and health goals, and strategies to achieve these goals
  • Completing a physical assessment to determine your current physical abilities to enable a program to be designed
  • Development of an exercise program, clinical or home based, individual or group
  • Instruction on how to complete the exercise program, including discussion on the role of the exercise and how to achieve good technique. written reports to the referring GP, Practice Nurse or specialist, detailing your exercise plan and progress
  • Ongoing assessment to track your progress and identify changes to the program that need to occur

After your initial consultation, supervised exercise sessions are available in 30 and 60 minute appointments, and can be used as a one-off or as an ongoing arrangement. The exercise programs can be developed to be used either within a gym setting or at home to suit your individual needs.

Why may a GP refer you?

  • To improve your quality of care
  • To improve self-management of your chronic condition or injury
  • To support you to increase your physical activity levels in a safe way
