Urban forests, vegetation, and trees play a crucial role in reducing cities&#8217; vulnerability to extreme heat. To mitigate climate-related risks, local governments invest millions of dollars in planting trees across various locations, such as parks and streets. However, it remains uncertain whether these trees can successfully adapt to warmer climates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Aim&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project aims to use bioclimate envelope modelling (BEM) to predict tree species that can thrive in warmer climates by integrating earth observations, meteorological data, and in-situ measurements with geospatial analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Objectives&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Develop a conceptual framework to assess the vulnerability of tree species to climate change.<br>\u2022 Identify resilient tree species capable of thriving in rising temperatures.<br>\u2022 Enhance and adapt the bioclimate envelope model to suit local conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Significance&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urban trees offer a variety of ecosystem services and help mitigate multiple environmental stressors. To strengthen community resilience against local urban warming, it is essential to plant tree species that are well-adapted to these evolving conditions. This strategy will enable local governments to optimize their investments, potentially saving millions of dollars while promoting long-term ecological sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An internship opportunity may be available for this project, with a structured internship plan developed before reaching milestone one. The research aims to produce measurable outcomes that address the growing concerns about heatwaves and the adverse effects of anthropogenic climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The findings will offer multiple benefits for Australia across short-, medium-, and long-term timescales. For instance, adapting public policies can proactively mitigate the societal impacts of climate warming, fostering resilience and sustainable solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Ideal Candidate&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate with exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills.
