Direct reduction (DR) technologies, particularly shaft furnace processes that use hydrogen as the reductant, are becoming increasingly important. Among these, the direct reduced iron (DRI) and electric smelting furnace (ESF) pathway—in which hydrogen is used to reduce iron ore to DRI before further processing in an ESF—has major implications for the future use of Australian iron ores, which are typically low to medium grade. A key characteristic of Australian iron ores is their high goethite content, which has unique thermochemical features and may play an important role in these processes. It is therefore essential to undertake a systematic fundamental study of the behaviour and transformation of goethite, and its derived products, during the processing of Australian ores in low-emission DR-based ironmaking routes.

Aim

The overall aim of this project is to generate new knowledge about the transformation of goethite under the series of physical, chemical and thermal process steps under conditions relevant to the future DRI-ESF low-emission pathway.

Objectives

1) to systematically study the thermal behaviour of goethite under a range of thermal processing conditions
2) to investigate how goethite influences the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of pellets
3) to understand the transformation of pellets made from Australian ores rich in goethite during direct hydrogen reduction

Significance

This PhD project will make an important contribution to understanding how Australian iron ore resources can be integrated into next-generation low-emission ironmaking processes. This is highly significant for Australia, as iron ore is the nation’s most valuable export.

Ideal Candidate

We seek a self-motivated PhD candidate with strong organisational, problem-solving and laboratory skills. A background in chemical engineering or a closely related discipline is preferred, and prior research experience in resources/energy will be highly regarded. Additionally, the applicants should meet the eligibility criteria for entry into a PhD program at Curtin University.

This project is open to Domestic applicants only.

Scholarship

If you are identified as the preferred candidate for this project, you may be considered for an RTP scholarship.

Enquires and How to Apply

For enquires about this opportunity contact Professor Hongwei Wu at H.Wu@exchange.curtin.edu.au

To formally apply submit an Expression of Interest to Professor Hongwei Wu during the Central Scholarship round (July 1st – July 31st 2026)

[51
5487
45
post-145540","hdr-r-projects","type-hdr-r-projects","status-publish","hentry","faculties-science-and-engineering","hdr_types-rtp-scholarship","research_areas-resources-mining-and-minerals
["GET
