This ARC Discovery Project offers an opportunity to contribute research that addresses climate change, soil health, and ecosystem restoration. The successful candidate will investigate how native Australian plants can help restore carbon to degraded soils. Using advanced imaging, molecular analysis, and modelling, they&#8217;ll study how plants, soils, and microbes interact to capture and store carbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\"><strong>Aim<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To study the interactions of native plant diversity and microbial traits with soil properties to gain a mechanistic understanding of organic carbon dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\"><strong>Objectives <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To quantify how native plant functional traits and plant diversity influence soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics in semi-arid ecosystems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To determine how plant and microbial functional traits interact with abiotic factors\u2014such as climate, soil physicochemical properties, and mineralogy\u2014to affect SOC turnover and stabilisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\"><strong>Significance <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research will inform national climate policy and may contribute to Australia&#8217;s carbon credit system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\"><strong>Internship<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The successful candidate will be provided with an internship&nbsp;opportunity, to support the research project <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\"><strong>Ideal Candidate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p><strong>Essential:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Masters or Honours degree (First or Upper Second Class) in soil science (emphasis on biogechemistry), ecology, environmental science, plant science, or related field<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Strong academic record showing research ability<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Interest in soil carbon, plant ecology, or restoration (shown through thesis or coursework)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Laboratory skills or ability to learn<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Willing to do fieldwork in semi-arid areas; physically fit for outdoor work; driver&#8217;s license (or willing to obtain)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Understanding of experimental design and modern statistical methods<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Excellent written and spoken English<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Ability to work in teams and independently<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Strong organisation and time management<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p><strong>Highly Desirable:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Soil sampling, plant identification, or field survey experience<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Previous research with publications or presentations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Statistical software or modelling experience (R, Python, Julia, or similar)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Completed (or completing) Honours or Masters with research component from recognised university<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Meet Curtin University PhD admission requirements<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Not currently holding another ARC PhD stipend<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Available to start early 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Willing to enrol full-time at Curtin University<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Able to live in Perth, Western Australia during candidature * Willing to obtain necessary ethics clearances<em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project is open to domestic and international applicants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\">Scholarship <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This scholarship is funded by an ARC Discovery Project and includes a living stipend of $38440 p.a. pro rata indexed, based on full-time studies, for up to a maximum of 3.5 years.
