{"id":4694,"date":"2010-09-03T05:08:58","date_gmt":"2010-09-02T21:08:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/kookaburras-raise-cancer-awareness\/"},"modified":"2022-12-07T13:06:32","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T05:06:32","slug":"kookaburras-raise-cancer-awareness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/kookaburras-raise-cancer-awareness\/","title":{"rendered":"Kookaburras raising cancer awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Awareness of prostate cancer will be raised when the Australian men&#8217;s hockey team sports fluorescent yellow shirts in two upcoming Test matches against Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>The sartorial sidestep from the Kookaburras&#8217; regular gold strip results from a partnership with the Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5762\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5762\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/13\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Kookaburra-shirts2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5762\" title=\"Kookaburra shirts\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/13\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Kookaburra-shirts2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5762\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Kookaburras model their temporary new colours.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The bright yellow playing shirts sponsored by CHIRI will debut at the Test against Argentina on Saturday, September 4 in Perth.<\/p>\n<p>The colourful attire will also get a run in Sydney during the Test planned there for September 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately, no one in our team has ever had to deal with prostate cancer,&#8221; Kookaburra captain Jamies Dwyer said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, we are really keen to spread the word to get people talking about it so it can be prevented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy &#8230; collaborating with CHIRI &#8211; who undertake vital research into the prevention and management of chronic diseases including prostate cancer &#8211; we hope to put the spotlight on this life threatening disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CHIRI director Neale Fong said that Australian Institute of Health and Welfare research showed prostate cancer was the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>It is the second greatest cause of cancer deaths in men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTragically, more than 3300 men will die as a direct cause of prostate cancer,&#8221; Dr Fong said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;CHIRI is making a difference in this arena by initiating vital research into the cause, diagnoses and prevention and treatment of prostate cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>September marks the beginning of prostate cancer awareness month.
