{"id":4676,"date":"2008-06-01T06:40:58","date_gmt":"2008-05-31T22:40:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/curtin-profile-mark-woffenden\/"},"modified":"2022-12-07T13:06:29","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T05:06:29","slug":"curtin-profile-mark-woffenden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/curtin-profile-mark-woffenden\/","title":{"rendered":"Curtin Profile &#8211; Mark Woffenden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Woffenden has been appointed Executive Director of Curtin University of Technology&amp;rsquo;s new Resources and Chemistry Precinct.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Woffenden plans to unite government and industry, protect and grow  Western Australia\u2019s resources industry and save the environment \u2013 no  mean feat for a self-proclaimed \u2018non-academic\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We continue to make break throughs in areas that have long been seen as  fairly staid \u2013 there are a lot of frontiers to go yet.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>No doubt Mr Woffenden\u2019s 30 years experience in the mineral industry across organisations including Rio Tinto, Hamersley Iron, Comalco Aluminium and KPMG Consulting and, most recently, at the Curtin supported AJ Parker Centre, will be useful with his plans for Curtin University of Technology\u2019s <a title=\"Curtin's Resource and Chemistry Precinct\" href=\"http:\/\/rcp.curtin.edu.au\/\">Resources and Chemistry Precinct.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Chair of the Cooperative Research Centre Association committee is the inaugural Executive Director of the Precinct, which is currently under construction at the southern end of Curtin\u2019s Bentley campus.<\/p>\n<p>The Precinct will develop new ways to extract metals from material currently considered  not economically viable and aims to keep sustainability at the core of its endeavours.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Curtin\u2019s involved in some of the very leading edge work in hydrometallurgy,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We continue to make break throughs in areas that have long been seen as fairly staid \u2013 there are a lot of frontiers to go yet.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>While Mr Woffenden thinks the current China and India fuelled resources boom will continue for \u2018quite a long time\u2019, he\u2019s keeping his eye on the horizon to secure Australia\u2019s enduring minerals industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We shouldn\u2019t lose sight of the fact that other countries, particularly in South America, are strong \u2013 they\u2019re filling as much of the market as they can and they have some very high quality mineral assets,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018While Australia\u2019s done very well, some of our mineralisation is actually not the best quality in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019ve achieved our position by applying wonderful science and technology to mining and processes.
