Studying at university isn\u2019t just about earning a degree \u2013 it\u2019s a chance to broaden your horizons, grow your confidence and prepare for a career that makes a difference. For Bachelor of Commerce graduate Kavi Chotai, Curtin delivered all of that and more, equipping him with the skills, experiences and global mindset to take his ambitions even further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kavi first heard about Curtin while at school in Kenya. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCurtin was consistently recommended for its outstanding global reputation \u2013 especially in business and management education,\u201d he explains. \u201cI was drawn to the practical and internationally relevant nature of the commerce program, and I wanted to learn Australian management practices and eventually apply them to business in Kenya.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A global perspective<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n
From day one, the course\u2019s strong focus on international career-ready skills stood out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI enjoyed how the course was structured to combine theory with real-world application,\u201d Kavi says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe group projects, case studies, and interactive lectures helped develop my leadership and strategic thinking skills. The focus on global perspectives in business helped me broaden my understanding of how commerce operates beyond Kenya.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A highlight of his studies was an international study opportunity in Berlin, Germany. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was an eye-opening experience that combined cultural immersion with business learning,\u201d he recalls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI gained insight into how traditional industries are managed and marketed in Europe, and it helped broaden my understanding of global supply chains and product innovation. Personally, it built my confidence in working across cultures, and professionally, it gave me new perspectives I now apply in our family business.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Skills for a successful career<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Kavi says his commerce course was filled with hands-on learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSimulations and business case projects prepared me for managing a real business environment in Kenya,\u201d he explains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, he draws on those skills daily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCritical thinking, team collaboration, project management, and strategic planning are skills I use every day. Curtin helped me develop the ability to analyse business issues and communicate clearly with different stakeholders.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his family business, those skills are already making an impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI enjoy applying what I\u2019ve learned to improve operations, from inventory management to customer service. Being able to contribute to a local enterprise with a global perspective is deeply rewarding.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Looking ahead, Kavi has plenty of ideas for the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI hope to expand our family business and incorporate modern Australian business practices into the Kenyan retail and construction sector,\u201d he says. \u201cEventually I plan to establish a consultancy helping other local businesses innovate and grow.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A vibrant and welcoming student experience<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n
From his first week on campus, Kavi says he felt supported. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe international student orientation was very helpful, and joining student groups helped me build a network quickly. Curtin\u2019s support services were also very approachable whenever I needed help.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says the campus offered endless opportunities to connect and get involved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCurtin has a vibrant and welcoming campus atmosphere. I enjoyed the mix of cultures, the student lounges, the free workshops, and the well-equipped library. The support from student services made settling in easier.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perth also proved to be the ideal place to study. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI wanted a calm and safe city that was not overly crowded. Perth offers a great quality of life with good weather, access to beaches and parks and a multicultural community that made me feel at home.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kavi\u2019s message if you\u2019re considering study at Curtin is simple: make the most of everything Curtin offers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cConnect with academic staff, use the career services early on, and get involved with student groups. Curtin offers a lot of support if you\u2019re willing to engage with it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
